A friend of mine asked me to post this for him. He recently purchased a lightly used bushmaster ACR and took it apart for a good inspection and clean. When he reassembled it he noticed the fit between the upper and lower was quite loose. He isn't sure if it was like that prior to disassembly, but isn't happy with it either way. Is this normal for this type of rifle or is it something that requires gunsmithing? I told him to measure the OD of the pin and the ID of the holes and maybe have some pins custom machined with a tighter fit?

Thanks in advanced!

Just like an AR, it's pretty normal unless it's really excessive. It doesn't affect anything and nothing to worry about. Tell him to go shoot it and have fun. He'll forget all about it after the first round is fired.

If he's really unhappy with it I'll give him $1000 for it as is ;)

Honestly I'd have to check cause I didn't really notice anything different than an AR, guess I wasn't expecting anything else...

Even the expensive Swiss arms rifles had a bit of 'wiggle', about 0.5 to 1.0 mm between the receivers. They still shot well.

U can google the rubber band fix... Or put small tab of paper in there at certain points...lots of acr have slop

little wiggle is nothing to worry about, tight tolerances can affect reliability in severe conditions.

^ That's the truth. Some rifles were designed with wiggle in them for this very reason ;).

Watch from 2:58 to 3:44. I know some of you may pick up on whos channel the vids hosted on (and may discount the points because of that), but that's Jim Fuller speaking and he know's his stuff in this topic :).

The one I just handled has no more wiggle than an XCR. I agree with the above, I have read it is all about reliability. Doesn't have an effect on accuracy.

If you are concerned about it, a piece of cut-down electrical tape will stop any movement. Honestly, it doesnt really effect anything, so dont worry too much.
