Bushnell 6500 vs Sightron S3

I am not trying to start a bash fest here, just a honest question. I had a 8x32x56 S3 sightron lrmoa on my last bench gun. I was not blown away like I thought I should be. Also consider before that I only ever used sub $200 bushnells. Our range maxes out at 200 yards. My newly purchased gun is a savage model 12 lrp in 6.5 creedmoor.

I get the winters off so that's when I do most of my shooting. I would like to do some coyote hunting but the guns main purpose is paper. Where I would coyote hunt there isn't alot of wide open spaces. I really love the idea of the bushnell 6500 4.5-30-50 as it goes low and high. If I go with the sightron I would probly go with the 6-24-50 but I would really rather have more than 24 for paper. I also figure I probly wouldn't run on 24 mag as you need to cut them back a bit to get the best picture. I used to run my 8-32 around 28-30 for best picture.

For the guys that say you don't need that much mag for 100 or 200, well that's not me. I wanted more than 32 when I had it as I only shoot at very little dots. I love the lrmoa reticle but the big question is how is the bushnells glass compared to the sightron s3. Others that looked thru my scope were very happy with it but honestly I thought it would of been better for what everyone says on here.

There is no one close by that has a 6500 in stock so I can't just look thru one myself. The big saving grace for the bushnell is if I buy it from a authororized bushnell dealer before the end of the year and don't like it bushnell will refund your money.

Don't bother with other brand ideas as I have no interest. I looked thru all the vortex stuff at my local Canadian tire (they had $1000 high mag ones) and was not impressed with them either. Hell, my old scopechiefs blew them away and there 20 years old or older.

So is the sightron glass $300 better than the bushnell?

I would say the Sightron Glass is better, but the Bushnell 6500 would be more durable if your taking this afield. I wouldn't want to use a Sightron on a hunting rig, but would not feel disadvantaged using the 6500 to punch paper at only 200 yards. The 6500's are nothing like the sub $200 Bushnell Banners you used too. The Glass in the 4200 and up Bushnells is made by Bausch and Lomb, they have a lifetime warranty and can be repaired or replaced here in Markham Ontario.

I guess I will have to drive somewhere to find a bushnell to look thru. Saying I am not easily impressed would be correct. Other than the sightron I had I've used mainly used bushnells all my life. I have never bought a scope new other than the sightron so when you drop $1100 on a scope and are used to sub $200 used bushnells you kinda expect a bit bigger difference in image quality.

I did always feel I had to be careful with my sightron but that may be the fact is was pricy.

Looking through a scope indoors will not give you any idea of what the scope will do.
I have a 6500, going on 5 years now, and I am more than pleased, it has been a tough, reliable scope. It has features that are not available on other scopes, and the glass is amazing. It definatly gets two thumbs up from me.

I am about an hour and 1/2 away with a Bushnell Tactical Elite (I think the model # is 6549) mounted on a 10 FCP-K .223
If I can help somehow let me know.

The Bushnell one-year money back guarantee is valid only in the USA, don't get fooled on this point.

Bushnell's lifetime warranty is the best thing about Bushnell products IMHO.

The Bushnell service center is around the corner from me and they have never given me a problem with any of the scopes I have brought in. None have been brought in with proof of purchase either, 2 were straight exchanges over the counter on the spot.

Canadian Warranty

In the past our products have had different lengths of warranty coverage, however, since 1984 the majority of our products carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty. Bushnell guarantees your product to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the original owner. These warranties do not cover consumer caused damages such as misuse, abuse or repairs attempted by someone other than our authorized technicians.

Ditto. Which is why I now have an Elite Tactical on my Rem 700 now. :)

I just called accuracy plus and they have some in stock. I may drive there this weekend if they can price match as they are higher priced. I'm only about a hour to get there. Thanks for the offer.

I've had good luck with Bushnell's products and their warranty work.
I'm at an age where if one rifle is down, I grab the next one of my favorites.
The new Elite line is great for clarity with my tired eyes.

I bought a new Zeiss to put on the old magnum and I set two rifles up on the
counter propped nice and sturdy.
The old Schultz with the Elite 3000 and on the other rifle, my Tikka, I placed
the Zeiss in open rings and aimed way yonder up the mountain.
The difference between the two wasn't enough for me to pull the old Bausch
& Lomb to swap for the Zeiss.
Not to forget, the Zeiss do add a bit of weight too.

I've got both a Bushnell 6500 4.5-30x50 Tactical and an SIII 10-50x60.
I enjoy using both scopes and find a better picture through the SIII, that said, I have no complaints with the 6500. The 6500 has more user friendly turrets and parallax adjustment for bush shooting, where the SIII is a better bench scope.
The magnification in the Sightron is unbeatable ( $ for $ ). I find it usable to 40x +, and still very bright.

If all your shooting is from the bench I'd suggest the SIII, but I'm not going to. You're comparing an $80 scope to a $1000 scope, you can't be helped. :)

You're welcome, hope it works out for you. Just for clarity my Bushnell is model # 6245 not 6549

It appears they've now offered the bullet proof to can. residents. When I sent in an hdmr last year I asked about the money back warranty and was told it was for us customers and the info on the site supported their claim at that time. I was given a new scope and was pleased. Looks like Bushnell is a no brainer with that warranty.

I had an elite 6500 2.5-16×42 and have an S3 6-24×50. The sightron glass is much better. I was actually disappointed wih the Bushnell after I had a chance to look through the Sightron and my Nightforce. I find the Sightron to be almost as good as the Nightforce in the clarity department.
I'm not sure why Canadian_Zuk thinks the sightron isn't tough enough for field use. I have mine on my 308 and take it quadding and hunting. I've never had any issues.
The Bushnell is nice for it's wide magnification range and lifetime warranty but it isn't enough for me. It's gone and I won't buy another.
I actually think my Burris has better glass than the 6500.

I guess I will see first hand what the bushnell looks like as I have a new elite 6500 4.5-30-50 getting shipped Monday. Can't beet $719.99. If I don't like it I have a year to get my money back from bushnell. For the icing on the cake right now bushnell also offers a $75 mail in rebate on all 6500 riflescope plus a free dri duck winter coat!

It is a pity your purchase didn't work out. I stopped offering Bushnell products soon after they divorced from Bausch & Lomb. Pretty much when the 6500 family was created. I was so disappointed at the huge step back they had taken with their scopes. Looked periodically but its just not there anymore.

Some of the best glass I have used were Bausch and Lomb Elite 4200 target scopes... Fantastic and cheap. For the era, Bushnell Scopechief is a darling and they are certainly dirt cheap scopes at a gunshow now. $400 scope in the 80's was a big chunk of change.

As far as optics at this price point, there is nothing we can get new in Canada that will touch the Sightrons. maybe the new line of NF scopes will be close... some will find out by summer I am sure.

I think Bushnell should reconsider offering rebates and fancy guarantees and just put the money back into making better scopes. Just like the ones they used to make.... be happy to offer them again if they got much better.

Jerry

Uhhh TS had a S3 and was not happy with it either. Trying to sell him on that ain't gonna fly.
From his FS ad...
Keep in mind I am picky when it comes to optics. I had a Sightron s3 8-32-56 and sold it as I wasen't happy with it.

If he isn't happy with an s3 either, he needs a reality check. There's nothing out there that's better for the money.
