Am looking at either the Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16x40 or the Leupold 6-18x40 VXII to put on a new varmint rig this spring. Is it worth spending the extra $130 to get the leupold?? Which of these scopes has better optics?? I have never owned a leupold but have heard lots of good things about them. I use bushnells and have been happy with them. Please help me out.

The elite series is heavy compared to the Leupold and the eye relief is shorter but the glass is better. On a varmint rig I suspect wieght is not an issue so I would go with the 4200.BTW the vx11 4-12 is $400 usd and the 4200 4-16 is $420 usd. If you would be paying $130 more for less scope you would be getting truly screwed:(

I am basing my prices on new scopes, wholesale sells the VXII for $690 and the bushnell for $490. It actually is a $200 difference between the two. I want to buy a new scope not used. And weight and size are not a factor.

That is my point. Canadian prices are out of whack with U.S. prices. The prices I quoted are both for new in the U.S. So why is a comparable or lower quality(this could be debated as to which the vx11 is) $200 bucks more once it hits the 49th?

For a varnment rig go with the 4200. I'm also a Leupold fan and own a couple VXIII. But being this scope is going on a gun that recoil is not much of a factor, go with the 4200. If it was a hunting gun with lots of recoil eye releif & wieght was a factor, then the Leupold. If you were comparing VXIII to the 4200. then Big $ diff but hand down winner would be the Leupold. I have a 6-24X40 in 4200. on my Rem Model700 VSSF 223 And love it. Good luck and I hope this helps you. Tikka

I would go with the Bushnell 4200 elite if you can live with the power.

Thanks, I think I will go with the Bushnell but am not 100% sure till I look thorugh both. I dont know if I want to spend $200 more just to buy a name and a better warranty. If I go with the Bushnell I might get the 6-24x40.

I would recommend the Leupold VX-II 6-18 (with target turrets). I have used one in competition, and have been very pleased with the ability of this scope to return to zero. I shoot at various ranges, and require the turrets to be very repeatable.

I looked up the max adjustments that can be made by both scopes...Bushnell - 26 inches, Leupold - 56 inches. If you're going to try varmints beyond 600 yards, get the Leupold.

One other thing, 1/8 moa clicks (Bushnell) can be a pain compared to 1/4 clicks (Leupold).

Hey Cowpolks, check out Ebay.ca for deals on scopes. I bought my last 3 Leupolds off there. 2 new from the USA (silver vx3 3.5x10x40 & matte vx3 4.5x14x40 BC reticle) for half the price of each from Wholesale Sports with shipping and GST included. ($375 and 475 Canadian). The other is a Vari-X III 6.5x20x40 AO matte from a fellow in BC that was used but in excellent shape for just over 500 Canadian. Leupold has lifetime warranty and the depot for warranty/services is in Okotoks.

One thing Bushnell Elite scopes has over Leupold is the rainguard coating on the lenses. But with the alumina raincote kit and other options for the Leupold VX3 scopes, its just the same. Also the Leupold flip-up covers are the way to go over the Butlercreek ones if you have the VX3 scope.

I have a couple 4200 6x24s. The magnification does take a bit of getting used to, until you get the knack of *feeling* how to point the gun at a distant target, you might spend a bit of time waving the gun around. The feild of veiw is pretty small.

But I like mine.;)
