Hey guys,

Kind of a sad situation here but I'm new to the "fancy" scope world so I need a little bit of assistance in fully understanding how my scope works. I know you might be thinking "why would you shell out that much money if you don't know how it works?" and truth is I got the scope BNIB for less than half any in store price I've ever seen. I needed a high magnification for my .204 ruger and once I came across the deal I had to scoop it up.

Basically, how do I use these Mil-Dots in estimating range and windage? I've managed to sight it in (zero it, then unscrew and reset the turrets?). I think I've found a load that works good enough in my gun.. so should I just go out to a flat field and shoot and tinker around with the turrets until I know how much I'll have to twist to shoot out to 600 in increments of 50 yards or so? Any insight would be great.

1 mil is equal to the following at the following distance.
100 yd=3.6 in.
200 yd=7.2 in.
300 yd =10.8
400 yd= 14.4
etc.
etc.
So using this info and the info about the scopes rangeing @ 12x and 24x we can determine distance and come-ups and windage.
If a target is 36" and fills up the space between the centers of 2 consecutive mil dots and the scope is at 12x the target is 1*1000/1=1000yds.
size of target in yards*1000(factor)/mils= distance in yards...12" is 1/3 of a yard so .33*1000/1=330 yds.

So lets say that your rifle shoots 6" low@330 yds the way it is currently sighted in...... you would be good at ~.55 mil holdover using the mil dot and holding over half way between the center cross hair and the center of the first dot or clicking the elev. knob to cause 6" inch rise in impact at 330yd.

Wind works similar. You need to sight in at a distance, say 200 yds. Then shoot at 300, 400, 500etc. in order to get the "real actual" drop at each distance, this will show you your come-ups for the elev. knobs and holdover using the mil dot.

It will also give you your windage clicks or hold-offs for using the mil dot.

EDIT: If you like you can also PM me and we can walk thru it.

+1 for jbm ballistic I have this for my iPhone and once I have it all set you can print out the dope sheet ... I use the mil dot range computer all the time it has been real accurate

Thanks for all the help! I'll be sure to send out some PM's after I finish finals and have time to play around.

Also, the scope is not for sale! I've turned down enough offers already ;)

Cheers
