Bushnell Forge with LOCKING TURRETS or Nikon Black with ILLUMINATED RETICLE

Hello,

I am planning on mounting either to a 22-250 that I intend on using for hunting coyotes up in the bush (Newfoundland forest) and getting into medium to long range target shooting. The wind, humidity and cloudy skies love Newfoundland so an easy to see turret with great glass is important.

I've narrowed it down to two scopes in my price range that my LGS offers.

What would you prefer:

- a LOCKABLE TURRET 3-18x50 forge in FFP to keep the scope from being adjusted by the brush, or
- an ILLUMINATED RETICLE 4-16x50 FX1000 in FFP so that the reticle can be used at the lower magnifications.

While walking with the setup in the bush I will have it in a case for the most part, only when i'm working a coyote will it be out of a case. It will also spend a lot of time in a gun boot on an atv.

Cheers

Andrew

I would take CLEAR low to high magnification over an illuminated recticle; infact I would take any premium feature over illumination.

It might be excellent marketing but the new series of Bushnell scopes seem to be mighty fine in there respective classes. Nikons just never impressed me, I've even went to the store with the intention of buying one to try long term and left with a Vortex but to be fair I've only shot Nikons with that silly circle recticle.

Yes I agree, but i'm afraid the reticle will not be that usable at lower magnifications, and I have heard incredible things from the nikon black series.

I have the 3-18×50 Bushnell on my 308. Nice scope, love the dot in the center. Mine is MOA, not as cluttered as MRAD. I believe that the MRAD has solid crosshairs. I have a Nikon on a slug gun but I'll never go with them again unless they change their reticles. I've shot 600m with mine and that open center with the dot is nice. Athlon has some nice stuff too now. Reticles similar to the Forge. I'll be putting the Forge on my 223 and going Athlon ARES for the 308.
The Forge has 84 MOA of elevation and a positive zerostop. Two things you'll need if shooting long range + a 20 MOA rail.

How easy is the reticle to see at lower magnifications? that is my biggest concern.

here is a link to the nikon reticle in the fx1000 (comes in moa and mrad)

I'm on the road for another week, if I were home I'd pull it out and check. 600m I was at max. SFP might be an option for hunting. I had that discussion with my buddy. At low light and low power the reticle will be hard to see. That's where it gathers the most light. If you're going to go long range, chances are you'll be zoomed to the max. Forge SFP doesn't have the dot. Much cheaper too. $800 + at Bullseyelondon right now.
Nikon is 849 at Kelly's Sporting Goods

If you will be doing more hunting than range shooting i would lean to a sfp there are alot of nice scopes with locking or zero stop turrets. I run i vx6 and i love it the only time i use the Christmas tree is at 300+ yards so im on max zoom and the dope works and well with the turret the dope always works. That being said i have a vortex pst on my coyote gun and if you can live with the 5x25 they are on sale right now for like 1089 or somthing stupid at cabelas. Then you have zero stop and illumination.
