You're comparing apples to beavers (yes...beavers). It totally depends on the scope model. Compare a MK4 fixed power model to a Bushnell Rifleman...well it's not even worth talking about. Now compare a VX-III to a 4200 and you've got yourself a match. I own a Leupold MK4, and it's an outstanding scope. I'd be inclined to pick Leupold over Bushnell anyway because of Leupold's outstanding service.

It's a hard one to answer as posted....

Generally, Leupold.... but that said I can't always justify putting out the money for a VXII or VXIII.

Especially when the B&L/Bushnell Elite series have given me such excellent service over the years. I have more of the B&L/Bushnell Elite scopes than anything else.

But I do also have Leupold's... And Leupold does have that excellent warranty & service right here in Canada...

You just gotta look in the right places. I got my MK4 4.5-14x50mm with a TMR for $1400. Leupold's service does kick Bushnell's though, anyday.

Yeah, $1400 for that scope is is not bad at all. But being a hunter first and foremost, I tend to compare 4200's to Vari-X III's when somebody asks about the two companies.

bang for the buck - bushy, easy. Service doesn't really matter to me though - it's rare enough that a scope needs service and I have plenty of spares, so I can tolerate long service times. Especially when the scope rings in at half the price of a comprable (quality-wise) leupy

I have several High end Leupolds (one VXIII and one Leupold BR 24x40 scope) and like them a lot. But I do own more Bushnell's than I do Leupolds. If money wasn't an option I would probably get the leupold's highest model but since that isn't the case I really like the Bushnell 3200/4200 for a great scope for the money,

Bull-shnell's 4200 may be slightly better than a low end Tasco, but they aren't even in the same league as a Leupold. Their so called "warrenty" isn't worth the paper it's written on and twice I've had issues with their products and twice I've been accused of abuse   Both items were top of the line at the time, not low end junk. That said, I still have a few scopes and binoculars with the Bull-shnell name that are utilized when I don't require a quality product.

Maybe Bushnell service is a problem when you have to mail the scope in from the hinterland to get it looked at. When you live within driving distance of the GTA, you go up to the counter, give them a scope and tell them what's wrong with it, and wait while they go into the back of the shop. In a couple of minutes they walk out with a smile and a new scope for you...at least in my experience.

Come to think of it, that's one of the very few advantages of living that close to Toronto.

On the other hand, a Leupold must be shipped out for service, and you wait with baited breath for its return...at least in my experience.

Having said all that, I still want a Leupold on any gun that I might use to take an important hunting shot with. For use on a .22 plinking cans behind the barn, Bushnell is definitely the value leader.

Bushnell vs Leupold

Have a 4200 4-16 on my 223 and the optics are very nice. I have a Leup VXIII 2.5-8 on my 30-06 and the optics are a fair bit brighter and seem clearer. No argument they both are good optics though. Still, Leupold has its own fan club (Leupie Sluts) and there must be a real good reason for that. Besides that the options for rebuild, painting, accessories and upgrades for the Leups are pretty amazing.
I have 2 Leups and 1 Bush plus a pair of Bushnell Legend binos that are pretty nice. However I will not be putting a Leupie on my 10/22-mebbe a Weaver or Bushnell 4x.

You couldn't give me all the Bushnell products in the world to live anywhere near that stink hole.

Toronto and Bushnell seam to fit together nicely :puke:
