Looking for opinions on mounting an RDS on my 870. I certainly cannot afford an Aimpoint or Eotech but I want a decent quality sight for my 870.
I use it mostly around the property and it usually has an 18" police barrel on it. However I also use it for hunting (deer, waterfowl, upland birds, small game), so it is basically my go-to gun when it comes to a lot of things.
With this in mind and based on the fact that 90% of my shooting is at close range (50 yards is usually about the max... maybe the odd 75 yard shot with slugs), I felt a red dot was the way to go and came across the Bushnell TRS-25.
Now I am not stuck on this particular sight but for the money the reviews seem to be good.

My questions:
1) Anyone use one on an shot gun? if so, how has it held up and how do you like it?
2) what is my best mounting solution for this? I've seen a couple mounts that use the 870 receiver pins to hold it but I was not sure if they were a secure, stable way to mount a sight.
3) I am open to other suggestions so fire away on an affordable (under $200) reflex/red dot type sight that maybe I have missed and is available from sight sponsors.

Thanks guys!

Yes, I've used a TRS 25 on a 12.5 inch 870 - had no issues in about 500 rounds, all buck and slug. You have basically 2 choices, you can install a rail, or use a mount with a rail. The most solid way to go is to install a rail - if your 870 is factory drilled and tapped (there are screws along the top of the receiver) no problems, if not it's pretty cheap to have a gunsmith drill and tap the holes and mount the rail. The other option is something like the Mesa Saddle Rail, which does a decent job but obviously has more flex than a solid mounted rail. Given the price of the saddle rail, versus having some holes drilled and tapped, next time, I'm going with a solid rail. The only knock I've heard on the TRS25 (and strangely it didn't come from here in BC) is that they don't like getting wet, I ran mine in a full on downpour here and it worked great, but that's what I've been told.

black one was on for about 20 rounds of 3 1/2" #5 Winchester xp turkey loads with out a hiccup and mounted the camo one on the weekend and lined it up with a couple of shots of the same turkey loads and no problem so far. it's on a mossy 935 turkey model with 22" barrel.

My 870 is not drilled and tapped. I don't know if there are any smiths in my area because I've never needed one before, that's why I was thinking the saddle mount into the receiver pins. If that is not a good option I guess I'm off the find a gun smith!
Glad to hear my thoughts are in line with everyone else's on the sight itself though!

I had a TRS, no issues with it but live my Vortex Strike Fire and Sparc better. They also have a better warranty.

edit: I also use the Mesa saddle/rail and am very happy with it.

Saddle mount looks badass. ive got a trs on a rail on my 500. Good stuff. I had a problem with my first one and had to return it, it was a dud. The small MOA of the dot was a bonus as well. And the battery life.
