Busy Bee 10x18" Lathe repair and parts question

So in a millisecond of distraction / stupidity (never answer a cell phone while machining) I crashed my cutting tool into the chuck at low speed while under power and am pretty sure I broke the half nuts as the lead screw will no longer engage.

Can't see them (half nuts) as they are under the Saddle.

Anyone know if this is something I can fix myself if I can locate the correct half nuts?

Anyone have any suggestions for a parts source if I can determine the thread / size of the lead screw and half nuts? Are these pretty generic?

Lathe is a Craftex B2227L

I tried calling busy bee in the past regarding parts for another machine I had purchased from them but they were very unhelpful then and would rather order parts from someone else if possible.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Marc

I had luck calling Busy Bee before. I dealt with one guy, I believe his name was Amin..... but I could be wrong....lol, but he helped me a lot and sent me the parts I needed. It might be easier if you email them with a lathe question and request their expert to call you back.

Do you still have the owner manual, there is a parts break down.

Don't txt and thread .... ;)

Cheers

You didn't just break the shear pins in the lead screw by chance?

The lead screw turns when engaged and there is no noise or grinding / vibration.

WhenI try to engage the half nuts nothing happens. I can move the leaver but feel nothing at all, usually there is some weight / slight resistance when I would engage it before.

I will have to get underneath this thing which a mirror to see what is going on when I try to engage the half nuts

I feel like an idiot for crashing into the chuck having been an amateur machinist for 16 years and 5 years on this particular lathe.

Thanks a ton for this Rob,

I took a close look with a bright light and sure enough the lead screw had pulled back from the sleeve that goes into the gear box and the shear pin (appears to only be one) has broken. I wasn't not looking at this part of the lathe at all and was focusing on the saddle.

Removal will likely take a bit of heat as it does not want to come out with a punch and hammer and I do not want to damage the shaft.

Many thanks again.

They are tapered pins so try driving them out in the other direction. You should be able to get new ones from a nut and bolt supplier or make new ones yourself.
