I just ordered Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 scope. It'll take some time before Canada Post delivers it, and in meantime I'd like to order a set of Butler Creek lens covers for it. Does anybody know which numbers are a good fit?

If I were you I'd get a set of the brand new Vortex Defender scope caps and leave the garbage butler creek stuff alone.. if for no other reason than the Vortex ones carry the VIP warranty on them.

Agree with wheels. Butler creek caps are made of cheap plastic and the couple pairs I have had only lasted a little over a year each as opposed to the Tenebraex covers I have that are older than I can remember.

Nothing wrong with the Butler Creek ones. I have them on 4 guns and have had for years. I have never heard of them breaking. People must be doing something really weird to break them....I'm at a loss.

And besides, they're just there to do a job. Protect the lenses. Not have your dinner on.

I have exactly the same experience as you do. This is why my first thought was Butler Creek. But maybe I'll try something else this time.

As a long time retailer of Butler Creek caps I agree that they were a good deal for the money. Do to the volume I see there have been some failures with the pins coming out or the lid not staying closed. Also there are several sizes of eye and objective sizes to keep in stock. The new Vortex defenders will only have one eye size and four objective sizes due to the use of expandable rubber in the housing. This will make carrying inventory way easier than the BC covers. Also similar to the Leupold Alumina flip covers they will lock open in the horizontal position eliminating them from sticking up in the air. Also the hinge and pivot area is very robust and twisting the cap sideways had no ill effect. We will still sell BC's but I predict the new Vortex covers (will fit most other brands) will dominate our sales. Phil.

I would have to disagree 100%. Almost all of mine have broken at one time or another, from just normal use. Everyone I know that have Butler Creek have had the same experience. I even had one fall apart in front of my eyes from the recoil of the rifle (.308). If your Butler Creek caps are really old they were built better.

^^^^^^

My experience is the same. Mu last set broke when I was out in -5C weather and cracked all the way through along the objective side of the scope. I would accept this at -30C but not -5C.

x2 on tenebraex, they came with my scope. I broke a butler creek one in less than 3 months.

I'm scratching my head thinking: How come is it possible, that some people have BC covers for years and never broke any and the others get them broken in several weeks? Are there so many lemons or is it something else? :)

Morning, Phil. I bought my Viper Vortex PST 6-24x50 at P&D last spring while in Edmonton. Will these Vortex scope caps fit my scope? Jim

Yes these are built by Vortex for their scopes and others that share similar dimensions. These are friction fit with expandable rubber collars. I will post when these arrive. Phil.

Over the years the manufacture of BC covers have moved from Belgrade Montana to China and I believe the older ones were better quality. We still have lots of older less common ones still in stock but have replaced the more common sizes several times. We have sold over a thousand covers and have seen about 20-40 come back over the last 15 years. Phil.

I am predicting that the new Vortex defenders will be the hottest selling new acces. and we won't be able to keep them in stock. Phil.
