Hey guys so I have a 7 shot remington 870. I am going grouse hunting this weekend and I am just wondering if the butler creek magazine plug is long enough to block it to 2 rounds

Not sure if the 870 12ga mag tube is longer or not....anyway, I installed one in a 28ga 870 WM (without altering the original length of the plug).....I found that I could then load just a single cartridge in the tube.

my magazine holds six shells

Since the regular mag (12 to 410) capacity is four.......best way to find out is to install the plug
..... my hunch is that the original length of the plug will allow just a couple of 2 3/4in shells in that extended tube + the one in the chamber which would meet regulations.DerrickLee

k so just installed the plug with my remington 870 synthetic 7 shot(6+1) and yeah it isnt long enough. I ended up having to put two empty shells into the mag extension to work as a plug along with the butler creek plug in order to limit the magazine to two rounds. So for future reference for anyone else looking to limit their seven shot 870 with a butler creek plug u will either need to get a cap to replace the mag extension and then insert the plug or u will need to plug the mag extension with something as well .
Not a fan of the use of the empty shells for a plug. Just cut a wooden dowel to the proper length and put it in the tube.

"... my Remington 870 synthetic 7 shot..." Kind of surprised it didn't come with the right length plug. Mind you, not everywhere says 3 rounds in the shotgun for hunting anything. It was made to be a slug gun. Short barreled, cylinder choked, shotguns make dandy upland bird guns. Not so good for migratory birds.
