So, I just cut down wood stock for my son. One thing I didn't put much thought into was the butt plate. I'd reuse the original, but it is plastic molded and the way they did it, well, it just won't work. I don't have a piece of black plastic handy or I'd just trace and use that. I have a think chunk of aluminum (1/4 in). I might have enough rubber gasket material I could glue on... I dunno. My brain is running out of ideas at this point. Ideally, I'd like to shop out of my garage for this one. Anyone have any good thoughts while the Tru-oil is drying?

Aluminum is great! Carve a Styrofoam mold into the exact shape you want, then cast one out of aluminum. There are a few videos on Youtube that can walk you through it. Check out Grant Thompson's Youtube channel. Sure, it's a bit of a "to-do" but you could end up with a pretty sweet, custom butt plate.

I would have said brass, but it's not like he's shooting a 50 or anything...unless?

Nope! Not a 50. Just a 22. Casting aluminum eh? I'll have to have a look at that. I could think of a few things I could do with that (and not just butt plates).

Try one of WhyNot's "Flip-flop" or - if you are older than 50 - thong recoil pads. Easy to make, fairly inexpensive, and looks pretty good to.

Two stock cuts with the original butt plate on the original stock just leave off the amount you want shorten...

There is nothing wrong with your idea of 1/4" aluminum. No casting required, just a bit of shaping, fitting, and finishing.

I have cast them using fibreglass etc., you can cast them right onto the stock, no screws required, then "file" to shape.FWIW --- John

I found a piece of rubber, but it's too thin. I think I might cut a piece out of that 1/4 aluminum I have. At least it will be removable.

What's wrong with shaping it, sanding it and finishing it... even checkering it...? why bother fitting anything on it?

That's sound like a great idea, one I should have thought of (or asked you guys about) before cutting! I think I'm going to take the hard road on this one. I'll look for a piece of 1/2 in album and shape that. If it looks half as good as what the pic in my brain thinks it looks like, it should be nice.

CoonT, you're an evil man... Made the forge. Now, not a popcan is safe in my house anymore. My first casting was almost a success. Found a bubble and had to start again. Still have a little bit of fitting to do.

Got this done today:

That is awesome! Well done.

Does your wife know that her next 5 Christmas gifts are going to be cast? ;) (don't bother with jewellery. Wives' don't like home-made aluminum jewellery much.....so I heard)

how about just getting a take off recoil pad, or better yet a grind to fit limb saver and make the rifle not only look good, but the fit and function will be something the kid can appreciate on his custom fit stock

Well...it fits him now just about perfectly. I like the idea about a grind to fit one. I can slide it in between the wood and aluminum as he grows.
