Butt stock cartridge holder for lever action rifles

It's because leather stretches to whatever diameter you push into it - .303 tapers from .460" at the rim to .401" at the shoulder,
7-08 is .470" at the rim to .454" at the shoulder (based on a quick google search). You cannot move down in diameter from 7-08 to .303 and expect it to hold tight, you could go up from 7-08 to 7mm mag and it would work just fine.

True story, start em small an move them onto bigger Cartridges as she loosens up! it was Not leather but the Elastic material ones.

I'm looking for a Canadian company that makes leather cartridge holders (buttstock) for my lever action rifle. Can anyone point me the right direction?

While I don't use a lever gun much for hunting, I've always found that those tube magazines held more than enough for hunting w/o needing more on the buttstock.

I have used those buttstock cartridge holders on other rifles and found they just end up being an added expense, weight and hassle, but they do look cool.

I think the best argument against an ammo pouch attached to the side of the stock is that it prevents you from shooting from your weak side. "Oh I'll never do that!" Well I have, although not frequently, and its not a skill set I'd choose to abandon simply because I want ammo hung on the side of my buttstock. Now a spring loaded cartridge trap on the underside of the buttstock is a nifty idea, and could house half a dozen rounds of small game loads if you were so inclined.
