Buttstock repair

Hi Folks

I have a bubba butt on my 1916 No1 MKIII.
On occasion at the gun shows I’ve seen other rifles with a repair or stock length adjustment.
The way it is, it can’t get worse. The replacement I got is no better so an epiphany struck me to make it look like an armourers or field repair.

Was there a specific dimension in the dovetail they used, or, if they used the tongue and groove what was the proper widths and depth of the tongue?

I haven’t had much luck locating pics online. I am thinking I might have to section two pieces from the second bubba stock in order for it to be proper dimensions meeting up to the other one.

Essentially a pad was added to the stock and then a spacer and the proper plate fit to that by Fudd.
Hope that makes sense.

Thanks

The dovetail is .315" + or - deep with groove in the rear part. Pin is .625" wide at the widest and .525" wide at the base or narrowest point. Again, measurements are + or -. Doesn't appear to be tapered.

Look in Numrich Arms site. I seem to remember they had some EL (extra long) butt stocks for No4 rifles. With a lot less work, and seeing as your butt is already bubbaed, one of these extra long stocks could easily be fitted.

If the stock is already modified, why are you worried about the dovetail??????? Just add and finish a spacer to fit.

The No4 stock I was sold did not have the same butt plate at the No.1 plate I had so I traded it and got another No.1
I don’t know if that’s always the case, I’m not in my forte by any stretch here.

Why dovetail you ask?
Being a budding wood worker wanting to learn unique joints is one.
I guess any Fudd can cut and add to any stock. The armoury repairs are almost an art form to me though. The perfect cuts and tight joinery. This isn’t just a rifle to flog later, it’s my Grandfathers to be passed down.

And partly could be the fact that proper wood that matches simply doesn’t appear to be for sale, I’ve had enough of getting taken for a ride and am a bit hell bent for leather to get this done one way or another. It’s been a challenging project to put it mildly. This last Fudd stock is correct colour so it makes me want to make this one work.

Well, now that you've fully disclosed your reason for what many would consider a waste of time, I think you should go ahead and do the job.
