Had a Imac once, and it was a POS! First the harddrive cratered right after the warranty expired, and then about a year later, the motherboard piled up! Got it sitting here collecting dust, figure I might take it to the range, and see what the 45-70 does to it!!!

I run Windows XP as an application in MAC OS, for the piece of PC software I need. It was easy as balls to set up (software is called Parallels) and works perfect. I can flick back and forth between Mac and PC applications just like any other running application.
I have a 10 gig partition also set up to boot the computer in Windows, because I got COD4 (game) for Xmas. Also works perfect.

I've been using Mac since I started (around 1988) and I do prefer it. (When I worked as a recording engineer, however, I must admit that I found the best programme for my particular work was - and still is - Windows-only.)
As to your problem, as others have suggested, the new Intel Macs will run XP simultaneously on a separate partition, using "Parallells" software. I will be getting an iMac in the next couple of months and will probably go that route as I will occasionally need to run a proprietary Windows program for my job as well.
I haven't looked into Linux yet but it seems to have a loyal following. Software compatibility is likely to be a bit of a problem if you need to swap files but apparently there are a lot of good applications out there.
Good to have the choice. Keeps everyone happy (or at least as happy as any OS and software can. None of 'em is perfect.)

il never use a mac sorry. none of my computer games run on a mac without emulation. and id hafta have a copy of windows anyhow to do that. so i might as well use a PC.
as for linux. id love to. but again it doesent play all my games. and im not paying an extra 150 fo i can rent a program that allows me to buggily play my games.

Agreed. If you're a gamer, a Mac is probably not the machine for you. I don't know about the Intel Macs; games are pretty processor-intensive and running both OS's at the same time might slow things down too much.
Fortunately (for me, anyway!) I never got into games. I remember when new external hard drives came loaded with games and other stuff (and when they were really expensive, too, esp. as my digital editing gear used SCSI drives) and the first thing I did, without hesitation, was to drag all that stuff to the trash. "Lead me not into temptation, I can find it myself", as they say.

As stated, its a free operating system that runs on your average PC, actually, if you have an older PC, it will generally run faster, and better than windows, There are many different flavors, Ubuntu is a great way for anyone interested to start, you download the file, burn it to CD, and pop it in your computer, and you can try it out without wreaking your existing windows installation. If a persons main time on a computer is spent just internet browsing (please please use firefox!) and checking email, Linux will do you just fine. If you absolutely need to run some peice of windows software (like analytical software) you can use a free program called WINE to run windows programs in Linux. I have 11 computers in my house right now, all of them but one is Linux, and that one that is Windows is a test machine, for testing various software. Also there isn't really any need for things like antivirus software (and if you need it, its free!) for linux as its not as prone to virus's as windows. Have I sold you yet? Theres also programs like open office, that function near exactly like microsoft word, excel, powerpoint, ect, and its also free. Just my 2 cents (more like $5 after that rant...phew!)

You buy a mac machine, and partition the Hard drive (or just go out and buy an external one) Then, you download "Bootcamp" (this is legal software available on the apple website) and you get a copy of Windows XP (because we all no vista sucks

Linux is by far the best option. I switched the office computers and even the notebooks to Ubuntu linux last summer in my small business, and no one had any trouble adjusting. Everything is free, including Open Office. No need to buy additional software like with Windows and Mac. Its as user friendly as both of them (at least ubuntu is, can't speak for other distros).
The only downside is if you play PC games. I have a Dell XPS laptop for gaming and I have to admit, I still dualboot Windows XP so I can play games (although its a pirated copy, if that makes you feel any better)

When I want to play games, I console game, I use my nintendo Wii to play the old classic NES games (Blades of Steel anyone) SNES, Genisis, ect, I dont consider myself a hardcore gamer by any means, so Linux does me just find, and theres increased gaming for linux now-a-days, there porting just about everything over. As Sogetthis mentioned, open office is as good as microsofts office, and have you seen what there charging for a full copy of office... If you need to do photo editing, use GIMP, its as powerful as photoshop, and its free (also works on windows, for anyone who needs a high power photo retoucher)

The Ubuntu installer makes a partition on your disk, installs Linux and a wealth of FREE applications, including that great Open Office suite then goes fetch your preferences, address books and all from your existing Windows system.
After that, you can choose on which system you want to boot by default.
BTW, Mr. Gates HATES Linux...
