Buy new or used on a rifle with unknown round count?

Try some 168 factory lapua if you can get your paws on it, I've shot .40 5 shots with mine.. Hell of a rifle for a hell of a price. I got mine at lebaron with a nice x24 bushnell elite for just under 1300 taxes in

Did yours come with a muzzle break as well or is that something new they're including? LeBaron had the best price for the AAC SD at $694 minus 10% for club LeBaron members! Tough to beat that!

If it's only a $100 difference then I'd consider buying new. However I have bought two used Remington 700's with unknown history that were in good shape. One in .308 that averages about .75 moa at 200m, and one in .223 that is a little better than that and has averaged just over 0.6 moa once I got a good load figured out.

Chris.

I believe that's new. I bought the sps tactical with the heavy barrel. It's a fantastic rifle, stocks kinda junky but its light enough that I can use my target rifle for hunting . .

Thanks :) And that was before I started loading to bullet ogive. The 168gn AMAX at an OAL of 2.81" by just tweaking the powder amount, the groups tightened up between 42 to 42.5gn IMR 8208XBR (my all time favourite powder). The 4 shot "one" hole group was at 42.5gn. If your rifle's only shooting 1.75-3 MOA, then precision loading is your best option (I prefer not to call precision loading "reloading" anymore, as there's a huge difference). Or you could spend $2/round on Federal GMM :) which will probably shoot better than 1 MOA. Your rifle should shoot half MOA if you precision load and load test (Berger has a great seating depth test for ogive seating into/off the lands). If you don't want to invest in the gauges (Hornady bullet comparator & the headspace kits) then just test at 100y with various powder loads. My best was at 42.5gn but your barrel's harmonics might be best at some other powder amount.

I didn't even bed the SPS Tac that I had and it still shot that good. I actually like the rubberized Hogue stock, because like skip did, I used it for hunting too :) All the best!

Nice shooting Miykael! Give me confidence that the rifle is capable of pretty decent shooting. Well the used rifle was $600 and no warranty which was the deciding factor for spending the extra on a brand new one from SFRC which also came with a muzzle break. I'll definitely be looking into reloading!

I took it out to the Silverdale on Saturday shooting factory loads. I'm still shopping for glass for it so I took an older cheapie scope I had. Didn't do too bad for first time out. Sighted in at the 50yrd and then took it out to the 200yrd. Shot about a 1.75"MOA at 100yrds and around a 3"MOA at 200yrds. Not really precision shooting there. Shot at the gong with the last 4rnd and didn't miss a shot. That was fun.

Bedded the action yesterday and she's looking great. Barrel is nicely free floated even when on a bipod. :)

Thanks for all the advice and tips guys! Got to love CGN for that!

Thanks for the tips and info Miykael. I've also been recommended Varget and H4895 behind a Sierra 168gr Matchking bullet. Have you tried those powders?

Varget is great too, but I find 8208 XBR more consistent, temperature insensitive and the smaller grains are easier to meter. Previous to XBR, Varget was my go to powder, but I consider XBR a better Varget ;) You won't hear too much about XBR on the boards and I like it that way, keep it a secret...if only I could stop talking about it... ;)

I've used the IMR 4895 but not Hodgdon and between Varget & XBR, don't think 4895 is necessary. The IMR 4895 is great for M14 loads.

With the SPS Tac's 1:12 twist, I found the 168 Amax's great. Haven't tried the 168 SMKs, only 175 in my 1:10 Savage and not really a fan of Sierra (trying Berger's now) but I might go back and try them again. Hornady Amaxs are probably the most accurate for the price but if the SMKs work for you, stick with them.
