Buy or Build AR10/SR25?

Was thinking of building a .308 AR from a Mega Arms MA-TEN upper/lower, but I just picked up a lightly used LMT MWS from the EE instead :)

Now to find a 20" SS LMT match barrel in .308, or maybe .260 or 6.5 Creedmoor if they every show up.

That's a very nice 308AR. I bought mine NIB off the EE with the 20" barrel included as an extra. It was one of those deals I had to go for. Those are very rare. Especially in the EE. :p

Just be careful if you tighten up the barrel retaining bolts. Do not make them as tight as they say. A few of us have had bolts break. I suspect the torque wrench isn't as accurate as it should be and the bolts get tightened up by the user more than the specs call for.

Thanks for the heads up on the bolts. I have come across a few threads where people have snapped a bolt. May have to put a couple bolts in my spares kit. It would be nice if they weren't almost $20 a piece , but cheaper than replacing the upper ;)

i have had a AR10 lower for years now. almost impossible to build one for less than a whole rifle, not to mention nobody is selling any parts.

if this were the states, i'd say build, but it is not.

This is the answer. Get a Knight's SR25 from OST and don't look back.....;)

The only problem with the SR25 is the price. The LMT isn't cheap either but for what I paid I could put a NF scope with quality rings on it and still have change compared to the price of a KAC. With an Armalite I could put a S&B on the rifle and be even. That's a lot of coin. The KAC is good but it's not that good.

Made up my mind. Going to build one. After building 6-7 AR15s I gota try my hand at an AR10. That and the wait time for a Armalite Nationl match AR10 is at least 6 months. Barrels on order at ATRS, upper/lower is the MegaTen from questar, and it will sport the Daniels defence 12" lite hand guard (national match two stage trigger also).
Thanks again for all the great info!

OST has the Enhanced Rifle with a 20" barrel for $4500. As close as a military issued M110 as we can get (and quite frankly the same gun less the can). You are going to be hard pressed to put a similarly equipped built AR10 together for that cost (in Canada). And even if you do, you have a mixmaster parts gun.
The LMT with a 20" match barrel bought separately would be very close in cost to the SR25 and weighs way more.

That's actually not too bad. I remembered it being $5500. Before that closer to 7K. I'm very glad they are coming down in price. I would someday like to own one as well.

Actually a full Armalite to build is around 3K. That's not with mix matched parts. However the barrel will have to be made. If you have the right contacts you can get one made from the same blanks Armalite uses. Same finish, dimensions etc. So it is a real Armalite not a mix match. This also includes a magpul PRS, PRS grip and Armalite NM trigger. Not the regular A2 stock. Fireball and I both have SASS rifle builds near completion. The trick is being patient. You're not going to get this done quickly. Sourcing the right non mix matched parts takes time and luck.

With the LMT there were some exceptional deals from Questar back a ways. Currently the 16" SS version that is the same as that used by the UK is $3600. Still $900 less than that KAC. These come with adjustable stocks not the fixed A2 (I actually like the A2 but it's much cheaper than the Sopmod on the LMT or the PRS for the Armalite). Sell off the Sopmod and put on an A2 and the price gap further widens. In my case the LMT MWS that I bought was an exceptional deal. I just had to buy it. Yes I could put a NF on it versus the cost of the KAC and be even. But granted that was one of those "I'll take it" moments. Which are rare for me.

Don't get me wrong I'm glad the prices are coming down. I actually would like to own them all. But right now the prices still have further to come down on the KAC before I could justify the cost. Or a smoking deal has to come along. ;)

An SR25 and a SR15 upper is on my must have list, but right now I have a Bolt gun now as number one and a few other scopes come first.

The prices coming down are great to see, I'm tired of paying top dollar only to see the prices crash like they have in the past.

Nice, let us know how it turns out. Any details on the barrel from ATRS?

That is a decent price for an SR25. Once I'm finished accessorizing my LMT I will probably be getting close to that price.

20" rock creek barrel with a 1:11.25 twist(DPMS style). 0.975" under the hand guards, 0.936" at the gas block, and 0.875 to the end, threaded fo a 5/8 x 24 break/flash hider. Look forward to the parts rolling in to put her together. Will try to remember to post pic when I'm done. A lot to learn about these as they are not as stright forward as putting a AR15 together. Some parts are not interchangeable beteween makes.

That should shoot really nicely.

I'm sure you know this, but it's advisable to go with the DPMS bolt if using a DPMS barrel. Although I've heard of them being fine to interchange with Armalite bolts. Do your research first though. Headspace problems etc won't be any fun.

If you look up the past MATEN threads there was a dealer here that was going to bring in third company DPMS AR308 bolts etc in order to put together a rifle for the MA-TEN upper/lower kit. I don't know if it ever happened.
