Can anyone who has bought accessories or parts for their 10/22 from companies like Hawtech or Rimfire Sports tell me if they were charged any duty when their parts passed through Canada Customs?

I'm interested in a VQ TG2000 Trigger Group in particular.

crap shoot

For me it has always been sort of a crap shoot. Sometimes you pay more than others, you may have to pay a "handling fee", sometimes GST, sometimes duty, sometimes brokerage fees however minor. There seems to be no cut and dried rule for the fees. In any case, however, you will still pay substantially less for parts out of the U.S. We are always told to buy at home, but when I can buy the same part for half or less from someone in the U.S , I will buy the cheaper almost every time. A prime example is a hammer for a 10/22, can be had for about $30 US, and when you find them here, you will usually pay about $90. Not too many of us will buy it here. If you are looking for a VQ triggergroup, check the for sale section on Rimfirecentral, there are usually some for sale there. If I may make a suggestion, although a decent part, many on that site have said that the VQ group is not worth the money. I might suggest looking at getting parts made by Skeeter from Rimfire Technologies and doing your own. You will end up with about the same or better trigger pull for a lot less money. I have shot a complete VQ 10/22 and was less than impressed with the trigger on that particular gun. My Skeeter adjustable parts make for a very nice trigger at a fraction of the cost. Ultimately, you can get what you wish, but money saved can buy other gun stuff. Just my 02. Later.

I ordered about 300 bucks worth from Rimfire sports , and was hit with a 47 buck bill for customs and Canada post handling fees.:( To make it worse Rimfire sent the wrong stock , which cost me 27 bucks to send back. And although order was placed in late January and 4 e-mails later I am still waiting for some of my order.

I ordered a GM barrel from Rimfire. I havent seen it yet, but ill let you know how it goes when it gets her. I hope i dont get dinged, otherwise I would have just got it shipped to the US and would have gone and picked it up.

I'd order a couple of 100 bucks of 10/22 parts from Hawktech. He pays the shipping, the stuff arrived fairly quick, and the box was delivered without GST or the processing fees.

In my experience with ordering stuff from the States, if the box is small enough for the posties to put in your Superbox it seems to get delivered without any hassles most of the time. Bigger items like stocks and barrels might be a different case....

IMO the selection available from Hawktech and other US suppliers is better, and product is usually on their shelves and ships quickly.

Yesterday I ordered a WK Bolt Buffer(2 actually one for a work friend)and a VQ Extractor from Hawtech, I'll keep you posted whether or not I get dinged.

I have ordered and received parts several times from Rimfire. I have never had a problem . They always just show up in my mail box.
However these have not been expensive items. That may make a difference.

I thought that customs wouldnt let barrels in without an import permit. Same with bolts.

Where does one find the actual factual on this?

Be nice to find the customs code on all this because I was under the impression that sporting goods were supposed to be duty free up to a certain dollar value. There should be a sticky about this somewhere...

edit* Oh yeah. I have ordered a few times from Rimfire Sports. They seemed a bit curt when I emailed them asking some questions. But I have always gotten my shipments in less than a month.

But I always order less than $100 at a time.

This is the scoop. I have ordered, over the years, many $1000's of stuff from the USofA. I will mention, as I am sure many will note, it was a lot more fun before the knee-jerk reaction to 9-11. For instance, Brownells will now not even send you the screws to hold a base on your rifle unless you have a permit. But I digress.
If you buy from someplace that ships UPS (i.e. courier) you will get dinged with brokerage fees, duty and taxes. Usually. If the dollar amount is small enough, and the items fall in the right category, you may not get whacked as bad. Just because the items are made in the USA does not mean they are duty free, that usually means there will be duty to pay, unless the category is one where there is no manufacturer in Canada, and then they may let you off the hook a little.
If you can talk your supplier into shipping USPS (United Stated Postal Service) you will save yourself major hassle. Yes, you may still pay duty and taxes, but the stuff will be delivered to your door and Canada Post charges $5for brokerage fees, unlike UPS which usually starts at $25 US.
So, pick a good supplier, hopefully with a product that can be shipped to us terrorists here in Canada, and then talk nice and see if they will take the time to ship USPS, it is worth a little extra shipping to do so.

Wait for the warning from the Mod that it is illegal (from the US side) to ship firearm parts out of country without an export permit. The $100 thing is beside the point.

What!?!

This is so much grief. Got people saying "A" on one side and "Z" on the other.

As far as common practice goes. I order from Brownells and Rimfire Sports frequently, without trouble. Legal, or otherwise. Customs opens damn near everything I get shipped to me, even mundane ebay items. So I KNOW there is no problem on this side with the things I have been ordering.

All I want to know is where the regs are poste so I can read them for myself.

And as for it being illegal to ship firearms parts out of the states without a permit. I am going to have to see some sort of proof before I buy that one. If its true, Brownells, Numrich, Rimfires sports, the SKS man, and any of the other places I order from are criminals.

I ordered from a guy on this site who gave me the same pricing as the major US vendors and shipped it from a Canadian source.

No GST, No Duty, No Hassels, 4 days wait and Cheap Canada Post rates!:D
