So I think I've come to the path in the road where I need to add a 1911 to my collection. as much as I want one, I can't afford/justify dropping 5-6K on an STI, and I want something special, so the idea of building one has been planted in my mind. Can you buy a decent quality slide and frame set and build it yourself? I suspect I've been spoiled by AR's and other platforms and my lack of success finding much online makes me think that the answer is sadly no.

If I have to buy a complete firearm and start from there are there makes/models I should avoid or look in to more then others?

Check out the Dlask 1911 premium forged gunsmithing set, 9mm.

It comes with perfectly matched/machined slide and frame (stainless steel) and you buy all the bits to put it together yourself. Dlask sells everything you'll need with some different options, depending on your preference.

It's Canadian made and very high quality. I bought one this winter and got it together, it shoots amazing and Brownells sells their brand 10rd mags that fit perfect for a reasonable price. I ordered 6 of the mags for $200 USD, no problem getting them over the border.

I could send you pictures of mine as soon as I get it back from cerakoting.

All in for about $1600, I could have got it cheaper but I bought 3 9rd mags from Dlask and a magwell with ambisafety. I found grips on etsy . com, there are thousands of options on that site.

Here is it's first form. It now has a magwell, fiber optic sights and CNC machined grips. The gun is currently getting cerakoted black and the grips will be vortex bronze.

DAMN that looks nice! It's pretty tempting, but I think I'd prefer a .45 auto/government version. I've msg'd Dlask to see if they have or can get one.

As much as a 1911 in 45acp is cool, if you’re concerned about price, you’re spending double the price on 45 ammo vs 9mm.

I already have the 9mm itch scratched, and I am not concerned about the cost of 45 ammo, but thanks for the concern.

If it is their 1911 not 2011 you are looking for STIs can be found starting at $2500. I just got their Hex (single stack 1911) brand new at just shy of $3k.
You can get a Spartan for like $900 but think they are actually built in the Philippines.

What do you think of the D.W.?

I have a Dan Wesson LASD and an STI lawman , both in 9mm. Never had problems with my STI but the dan wesson has been having some failure to feed problems. The STI have a very nice and precise fit except for the weak bluing. The Dan Wesson is nice but the fit is not as precise. The duty finish on the Dan wesson is very reliable ( I believe they call the procedure as ferritic nitrocarburizing).
