Buying a 1911 is more complicated than a car!

Last week I decided to pick up a Norinco 1911 45ACP for $349. Thought it would be fun to shoot another caliber at the range outside of my usual 9mm Glock 17.

One thing led to another and I found myself looking at $1200+ 1911's very quickly.

Now I'm in a mess of confusion and complete uncertainty on everything:confused:

Internal vs external extractor - Fixed vs adjustable sights - firing pin safety vs no firing pin safety - rail vs no rail and the list goes on....:bangHead:

What started as a simple $349 purchase is now grown into a list comprised of (and possibly growing) Kimber Custom Stainless II, Kimber Custom Stainless Target II, Colt Gold Cup, Ruger SR1911, Smith & Wesson 1911 108284, STI Trojan 5.0

Who knows what more I'll add if I keep reading and searching online:eek:

My last car was an easier decision! lol

I'm aware that at the end of the day there is no perfect and ultimate scenario and most people will vouch for the one they have chosen as being a better option....unfortunately trying any of these isn't an option as I don't know anyone with a 1911...never mind 3-4 of them!

Based on the above list...let's see if you guys can help me narrow it down....or add to it!!!!!:rolleyes:

No stainless option! I've always wanted a stainless 1911!

The STI looks like a great option....great features and good price but I really have to go with stainless since that's what my heart is set on.

The STI single stack 1911's that have a stainless option are out of my price range.
 
We were talking about this at work today. Ultimately, find out how much you want to spend, then get the best 1911 you can for that amount of money. The depreciation is in ammo, not 1911.

If you are even seriously looking at the Kimber priced ones, don't look at the $349 ones, except for the times when someone is out shooting you with one. ;)
 
My 1911s must have internal extractor and fixed sites. I don't know why but that's how I like them. Check out the kimber line up. Shooters choice in arrowood ab. Springfield is also another nice choice. 1911s are like girlfriends, the first one is always difficult... After that you have a back log of them complaining you don't spend enough time with them.

Simple.

Rewind to the beginning of your initial post. Says very clearly Norinco 1911 45ACP for $349.00 See that? You got it right the first time. Get the Sport Model and shoot the life out of it.
 
there's an awful lot of us that learned to shoot on an ISSUED 1911a1- stick as close as you can to that - the rest is just gee-gaws

My advise is shoot the hell out of your Norinco, use it as a learn tool, do some modification and learn from there, by the time you know it really well enough, you will know what to buy bext.

And it starts... Once you get bitten by the 1911 bug you don't want to stop. You just keep going. Unlike a car (where you pretty much just buy/lease once and move onto something else) you might find yourself buying several 1911s... for no real logical reason other than you felt like you NEEDED to do it.

My first 1911 was a .40S&W Dlask, I have an NHC Predator on order, I really want to get my hands on a Ruger SR1911, was contemplating grabbing a Norc 1911 as a project gun, if a Springfield 1911 Loaded Black Stainless were ever to rear its beautiful head I'd probably pick that up in a heartbeat, maybe another Dlask?...

Instead of comparing a 1911 to a car, I think I'd compare it to Lays Chips, bet you can't eat just one!
 
I got this one a very long time ago ... a nice Colt M1911A1. I've looked at all the newer, shinier ones, and while they are pretty, I just haven't found any reason to buy another - this one does everything I ask of it - inluding it's looks.

Keep your choices simple. It's a .45, not an AR or 10/22 that needs it's own wardrobe to get dressed before you take it out in public :p
 
I hear there's a Mr. Brown south of the border that makes a decent hand pistol . . . :) There is indeed no end to it! I chose to buy a cheap Norinco off the EE to learn on and then go from there. I wish I had your budget available though!
 
My only problem with my Norc is the sights, the dots aren't chunky enough for my liking - easily fixed with some sight paint.

Get a few decent mags (Wilson, McCormick, Tripp) and shoot the crap out of it. Buy reloading stuff too, maybe some grips if you wanna fancy it up.

I'd worry about getting really proficient shooting and maintaining the cheap 1911 I've got before looking at a loaded Springer or Sig or something. Then open the wallet!
