Buying a "gift" rifle

I think the .270 gets a bad rap for being a bit too fast for the light 130gr and 150gr cup n core bullets of decades ago, even my uncle in his late '60's says "You don't want to shoot a deer with a .270, way too much meat damage".
If you compare it to the similar Euro cartridges like the 7x57 & 7x64m they both ran heavier bullets at slower speeds which would have produced nice clean expansion, penetration, wound channels, the stuff we like to see bullets do.
The 270 with a 130gr Barnes or Partition or Bonded core is a great close to medium range cartridge for just about all big and small game out there cept the big angry bears.
 
I'd go 270 Win. As cool of a cartridge as the 7-08 seems to be on the 'net these days (and I've had a few) the Model 70 Supergrade just doesn't seem "correct" in a cartridge introduced in 1980 or in a short action for that matter.

I'd have it in 270 Win just for that reason, nothing to do with ballistics for me. Second choice would be 30-06.
 
Specifically because this is a "milestone" gift and something that you'd want kept for a long time, and perhaps hand down, I'd go with the 270 Win, no questions asked. the fact that it's a classic chambering for the Winchester 70 is just the icing on the cake. Not saying that the 7-08 isn't long lived, but the 270 Win has such a rich history that it seems a fitting marker for a milestone. For me, it's all comes down to the symbolism that you're trying to convey rather than any practical difference.

Absolutely nothing wrong with it, that would actually be my preference.

I've only been able to track down SG's in: 243, 7mm-08, 308, 270 and 300wm so far.
 
Personally I think Winchester Model 70 Supergrade for a "milestone gift" should be in a classic Winchester cartridge
 
A Classic rifle like the Model 70 Super Grade deserves a classic cartridge.
The 270 would be greatly received and appreciated if I was to receive one.

But a 257 Roberts would even be better.

They both are great cal. I would buy a 7-08 for the bullet assortment, 7mm have better ballistics hopefulley a lighter rifle also with the short action as the winchesters are on the heavy side but well built
