Buying a "gift" rifle

Very nice that someone is going to buy you such a nice classic rifle. A M-70 Super Grade is identified in two chambering's, 30-06, and thanks to Jack O'Conner 270. I also have a 75th anniversary SG, and it only came in one chambering, 30-06. Why, because over the years more M-70's were chambered in 30-06 than any other cartridge.

So in my Fudd type mind a classic rifle should be chambered in a classic cartridge it is noted for. I would suggest 30-06 and if that not possible then the 270. Save the 7mm-08 for a Remington 700.

Just to clarify,
The rifle is not a gift for me, I'm gifting it to someone.

I agree with the 30-06 being a first rate choice and I will keep looking.

There is a gunshop in Cranbrook that I believe has a M 70 SG in 30-06..........It's called Mountain Man Sports..........maybe give them a call, if they won't ship or won't take CCs over the phone PM me and we can work out something to get it to you, if they still have one.

I've been in there several times, great place!

Last time I checked they only had an 06' SG with the Maple stock. I'll drop them a line though, thanks.

I just looked on Epps site (one of CGN's site sponsors) and they as of 0900 this am had 3 M-70 SG in 30-06, and 2 in 270 in stock. If your serious you best get right on one of them.

Now you know I'm not a fan of the .270, but I am of the M-70, and a M-70 should be a long action. Anyway, I'm also a SAKO fan, and recently I got a deal on a full stock model in .270. A 20" carbine in .270 doesn't make much sense, but a 20" carbine in 7mm does. The on line metric converters tell me that 7mm = .27559, that's close enough to .277 for me, so if anyone asks, my Mannlicher stocked SAKO is a 7mm.:cool:
 
If I were receiving a rifle for a gift, caliber would be my least concern. If my feet were held to the fire, I'd prefer a 270 because of ammo availability. I'm not a bolt gun guy but I'd still be honoured to receive a fine rifle like that.

Wellllllll......... I got a little carried away.

I bought a Supergrade in 30-06 and an EW in 308, I'll figure out which best suits him and go from there.
After spending some time searching for M70's, I think I need to order another one for myself in 280 ;)
