I've been shooting a chum's AR for years, and have decided it is time to get my own. I really want to start shooting some 3-gun and carbine matches, but I want to keep the expense of the new rifle around $ 1500.

I have looked at dozens of them online, and I'm having a really hard time deciding what is the best rifle for my money. Here are a couple that seem to be ok deals to me;

1. BUSHMASTER XM15-E2S AR15 CARBINE A3S 14.5" BBL (MAGPUL MOE
STOCK) SEMI-AUTO .223 REM 14.5" HEAVY BBL WITH IZZY BRAKE, TWIST RATE
1:9, MATTE BLACK FINISH, M4 MAGPUL MOE BUTT STOCK, CARBINE FORE END,
PICATINNY TOP RAIL, REMOVABLE CARRY HANDLE & REAR ADJ SIGHT - $ 1620

2. S & W M&P15I SEMI-AUTO .223 REM 17" CHROME LINED BBL WITH 1-9" TWIST, FLAT TOP BLACK ANODIZED FINISHED ALLOY RECIEVER, REMOVABLE CARRY HANDLE, DETACHABLE MAG, A2 REAR STOCK, CARBINE HAND GUARD, ADJUSTABLE APETURE SIGHT, FORWARD ASSIST, SLING SWIVELS - $ 1440

3. Stag Arms 2R Govt Edition. 16" 4150 Chrome-Moly Vanadium Barrel. MP (Magnetic Particle) Inspected. Hard Chrome lined for longer barrel life, easier extraction and faster bore cleaning. * 223 Wylde Chamber (Accurized 5.56 chamber. Shoots 223/5.56 ammunition).
* Highly effective YHM Phantom Compensator reduces recoil allowing for faster follow-up shots. Standard A2 FH Available by request.
* Taper pinned Front Sight Base for proper gas seal. Front sight base is marked F, correct for flat-top uppers. Includes bayonet lug.
* M4 Handguards - Oval. OR select Troy MRFS 7" or 10" Freefloat Quad-Rails at Installed Prices. (10" rail price includes removing front sight for rail clearance)
* Troy Industries Rear Folding Battlesight.
* Latest Milspec Materials and Finishes throughout.
* LIFETIME WARRANTY to the original buyer.
$ 1500

That's a lot to digest, maybe, but hopefully someone can give me some suggestions. I have done tonnes of research on these rifles, and they all seem to have decent 'ratings'.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

You can not really go wrong no matter which of the three you choose. Even the price gap from the lowest priced to highest is not that big...although you could use the money you saved with the M&P to buy ammo or mags

If it makes any difference to you, the M&P is also chambered for 5.56mm. The "I" version is only stamped .223 so it can deal with export regs, but its the same chamber that goes in all M&P15's. M&P 15's are also used by many Police Dept's in the States.

Stag would be my choice, product support from Arms East is first class, and if you ask they'll send you the rifle you really want. Bushmaster isn't the rifle that it used to be, sad to say. As far as chambers go a Wylde chamber is preferable as it allows 5.56 and .223 with increased accuracy.

Of those 3 go with the Stag. I have the Bushy (mind you it's now pretty heavily modified) but, IMO, the Stag is a better start for the money.

My choice for what it's worth would be the STI Competition rilfe for $1500.00. It comes with a great JP trigger. good forend, 1-8 twist and Nordic muzzle brake, I got one and love it, no hiccups yet.

I actually emailed the guys from NEA, and the president, Jeff Hussey got back to me promptly. He said that it would be out in the late spring, or early summer.

I would have loved to buy a Cannuck-AR, but the time frame just didn't match up. I am aiming to attend the May 15th - Fort Labosse tactical pistol & carbine match.

In the end, I went with the Stag, which I ordered from Arms East today;

This was a great company to deal with, and I will readily deal with them again. Newfies are still my favourite people!

Now I just have to wait for paper work and Canada Post...

Thanks for everyone's feedback. Much obliged.

Newfies are da best kind, me bys...haha.

Hard to go wrong with that Stag. The 16" will allow you to take it to the States if you want to, otherwise it would look a tad nicer with a 14.5" barrel, but that's minor.
