It's all about personal preference and past experience. Easy for someone who may have never been ripped off to just say you're being paranoid for not sending full payment. This hasn't happened to me but everyone's history is different. I've proposed a half now half later deal and the seller refused. We exchanged numbers and sorted it out on the phone that nite. Based on his Trader Rating and our conversation, i felt comfortable going forward with the deal. Would i propose the same half now deal again? He'll yeah. But in the end is up to me to walk away if I don't feel 100% confident about it, same as the seller. Do what works for you.
A freind of mine who is a dealer took $100.00 as a deposit from a fellow who lived in the same town at a Gun Show. The following week one of his staff started the transfer as the guy buying the gun gave all his info to the dealer at the show.
A couple of weeks go by and the transfer was completed. The fellow comes in the shop and asks for his gun. They tell him he can have it when he pays the rest of the money. He states he has and they say he hasn't. They keep the gun and he leaves.
A day or two later the RCMP pay the dealer a visit and tell him he has to give the guy his gun and the dealer says he hasn't paid for it. They ask him then why did he put it in his name?
Long story short he had to give him the gun.
If someone isn't willing to pay up front then they don't get the gun. That is just the way it works. I have bought over 100 guns off of this site and never did it any different and I have never had an issue with anyone taking my money and not transfering and then sending the gun, but I never deal with anyone with no feedback or more then one negetive rating.

It certainly is "reasonable" it he grand scheme of trading, although that is typically not how it works on CGN or in general online transactions. I always expect payment up front for my deals, and most people follow the same.
Graydog's note above is a concern, however in reality the dealer shouldn't have felt forced to hand over the firearm, that is more a situation where the police were uneducated and the dealer perhaps intimidated. You do not have to hand over a product regardless of registration until payment is provided for services or product rendered. No payment, no gun. Its just a pain in the butt to go through the process as the legal framework in this country is a joke. In that case it would have been as simple as refund the partially paid money to the buyer, and tell the RCMP to provide a report confirming as such to have the registration reverted back to the dealer.
If your concern is with protection as a buyer, then only deal with people on CGN with a good trader rating to provide confidence in their capacity to deliver. If they have a low trader rating then pass if not comfortable.

Not so. A sightly different situation in my case, but was no problem at all.
I bought a pistol from another member on this site and gave the seller my address and details. He started the transfer right away. In the following days...and then weeks...I kept asking where he would like payment sent. Wouldn't say. Finally the transfer was done and gun was in my name. I was not out any money, but the seller changed his mind and refused to ship.
I simply called the Feds and explained the situation. They dealt with the guy and the transfer was reversed. I received confirmation of that in the mail.
Yep. You initiate the transfer once someone has actually, paid in full and, bought the firearm.
Any other deviations from this have some strange understanding of how a sale works.

I think you are misinterpreting me. I have no qualms dealing with zero TR people, they just need to pay in full up front.
All of the above. Payment, in full, up front or no deal. Ship only after transfer has final approval & ATT issue to ship. Period.

Wouldn't even occur to me to ask. Look at the rating. Banter with Pm's a bit to build a relationship. Several times, I've been delayed in getting a payment out due to scheduling (I don't do emt's.....I know, I know...), and the seller has started the transfer anyways. Enter a transaction with mistrust, and you won't be trusted either. You have a zero rating, so you're gonna have to take the risk here. If you're worried, buy a bunch of smaller stuff to build a rating up,

50% deposit, followed by the balance, once the transfer ref # is provided to the buyer seems more reasonable to me.
Once the transfer is initiated, it's in the system, and trackable.
As it stands all the risk is placed on the buyer. Why?
50/50 split in risk between buyer and seller seems more reasonable to me.
If things go sideways as a buyer, I'm sure the CFC would listen to you, and react (ie RCMP visit to seller due missing restricted), if you have a ref#.

Monday or Tuesday of this week, a guy with the user name Armstarget - new user, no feedback score came on and had four guns to sell - a Python, a Sako Finnwolf and a Skorpion and something else. He had no EE access, and it all looked a bit hokey - so I emailed with him a bit and there was no way that he would begin the transfer without me paying first. It was the first time that I've asked for such a thing - and I do deal a bit.
The CFO was closed for a snowstorm so I couldn't call them to confirm addresses or the like.
He sent me pictures of a fellow named Jason Patrick Meyers - holding cards, but there was no way that I was sending an EMT to someone in that sort of situation.
I've used names here so that if the real Jason Patrick Meyers is on the board, that he will learn of it.

One question - how does a person check to see if the pictures of a gun came from somewhere like google images or the like?

I guess it all comes down to if you want to save a dollar or two. If it worries you, go buy from a store. It worries me very time I hit send on the EMT, but has always worked out for the good. (saved a fair bit of money) Real professional people here ON CGN, and hopefully we can keep the scammers out. as for trade ratings, not everyone gives them back to you, I've bought from 0 ratings and all was good. buying the non restricted worries me even more, until the parcel shows up.

No, full payment before transfer is started. Go by trader rating. I once got in a panic to send money for a rifle I just had to have and sent the emt for $800 and then no correspondence for 3 weeks. I was flipping out cause the guy wouldn't answer me after he received the emt. Rifle showed up 2 weeks after emt was cashed and guy responded 3 weeks after. Turns out his computer crashed and we had not traded anymore than addresses and pal scans so he had no way of letting me know.
Now, I always get pal, address, phone number, email address, and actually call the guy before I send money. I will even google street view the address to make sure it is a real address and ask what vehicles would typically be in the driveway in the last 2 years if the trader rating is less than 10. Until you have built your trader rating higher than that, I don't deal without the street view info that jives.
