I'm interested in getting an SW 19 or 66, and I've been made aware of a 66 rebarreled by a gunsmith with a 108mm barrel- so it's now restricted.

What do people think? Good idea? Has the firearm been desecrated? Should I consider it?

The deed is done. Buy it and enjoy it. Be glad you have saved one from getting taken away and destroyed.

Yes, but with our dumb laws sometimes that is the only way to keep some of these type of guns around......

Yeah it's blasphemy, absolutely nothing looks worse than a ppk that has been bastardized with a 4 1/4 inch barrel. That said, what else can most people do. I consider myself fortunate to have 12/6 and a mint ppk:D

so, the gunsmith, who's selling this out of his shop, wants $600 taxes in.

not terrible i suppose, but for that much, i could probably get a 66 6", one that hadn't been rebarrelled.

Yeah then you could have it cut to 4.2 inches. :D

well, it's more a case of all other things being equal, would prefer a pistol that HADN'T been modded.

i'm glad that this prohib has been rescued, but still would prefer all original, whether 4.2, 5, or 6"

A lot of the 66's were simply measured wrong in the first place. At the time, Smith and Wesson was owned by a company that didn't really care if the barrel was exactly on spec or not. I had 2 in my collection, 5 or 6 serial numbers apart, one measured 103mm, the other measured 109mm. I changed it's class just by measuring the barrel correctly!!

I would like to find a S&W 59 with a 106mm barrel. Don't suppose the company let any barrel lengths slip that far above Spec.
Nobody seems to be making replacement barrels for these, although I have heard that they have in the past. However, by the time you paid for having a 59 re-fitted with a longer barrel, you could buy other restricteds for less.

Bastard!

We'll all be laughing when we finally get our cans on our guns. :D

Once it has been "verified" as over 105mm, it is good to go.

I just went thru having a 6 inch put on a model 65 4 inch. got it as a restricted now.

it was an inherit, so had sentimental value.the job was not cheap, but was cheaper than picking up a used 6 inch.
