OK Mauser gurus, I'm going to buy myself an early Christmas present:

a K98 Mauser from Canadian Tire in Leduc.

I've looked at the bore on one rifle they have, and it desperately needs cleaning, but otherwise the rifle looks pretty damned good. I'm assuming these are Russian captured rifles, as the bolt is electropenciled marked but he the rest of the rifle looks to be in OK shape. The receiver is marked byf (Mauser manufacture? Im not sure)and the stock appears to be marked with the same number the bolt is electropenciled with.

I'm not looking for an all-matching rifle collectible, just a decent shooter. Is this rifle (as I've described) worth the $649 they're asking, or am I overpaying for something I'd buy anyway?

If you want it as a shooter as you said bore condition is everything. Id also see how the bolt works, make sure the safety works. And no rotten chipped away wood at the recoil lug, no cracks behind the tang. I also find the cupped butt more durable. And laminate is said to be heartier as well.

Pretty much what CanadianAR said, I don't have much to add to that. The only other thing I would personally look for, is a rare or at least uncommon receiver code just to make it a bit more interesting. If they have a selection there it might be worth looking through them in case there is something odd ball.

If you're looking at the K98s at the Leduc CanTire, check out the rare German captured Polish Wz29a that was rebarrelled with a German made Geco barrel! The Polish eagle was scrubbed off the top of the receiver, or maybe it was never stamped at the factory before capture....

But still.... Made and used by the Poles, captured, rebarrelled and restocked by the Germans at an East Prussian Arms Depot for use on the Ost Front, then captured and refurbished by the Russians, and finally coming to rest at a Rural Albertan Canadian Tire!

Buy it.... Before I do.... ;)

Save me from my Mauseritis!!!

....or.....

Buy my byf41 RC K98, so I can buy that wz29a....

No peening or scrubbing, on this one! All German markings intact!

Plus I cleaned every nook and cranny of this rifle and oiled it all up. Plus it has a sling and sight hood...

Same price as Can Tire.... PM me if interested!

;)

*Please Don't Ban Me*. :p

That sounds really neat! If I were you, I'd be down there picking it up this morning!

And post up pics of the receiver/barrel!

a K98 Mauser from Canadian Tire in Leduc.

They had some nice looking ones when I was there a month ago, made me want to get another! Went home with a mosin instead.
When I got mine a couple months back I was looking for one with the cupped but plate, wood in decent shape (as some can be terrible looking) and most important to me one with all the eagles intact. Nice bore a plus, but I have hunting rifles for shooting. Was quite happy with the one I got through EE. Now to find an original...

Went to check out Can Tire to see if they had that wz98a still there... GONE! :(

Oh well.

Bought an original (but refurbished) 1943 Izhevsk Mosin Nagant Sniper instead...

Merry Christmas!

Sorry you didn't get there in time to grab that Polish Mauser!

I was looking at the Mosin Sniper rifles as well, but I already have a 91/30, so unless I get rid of it, I really can't justify another Mosin rifle even if it is a refurb sniper. How's the scope look on the one you bought?

Finally able (I hope) to upload some pics of that K98 I bought from Desert Fox.

Couldn't upload all the pics Desert Fox sent me (effing Photobucket!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr ) but these ones show how nice the markings are on the Mauser.

A nice RC for sure! You can see the high quality of manufacture put into the earlier K98k's even through the poor blue job the Russians did. A great deal of care went into the manufacture of them, hence the prolific use of inspection stamps.
