I'm not entirely sure on what the process is for both the seller and buyer of a restricted firearm. What do both have to do in regards to the sale, the transfer, the transporting home, etc.

Thanks

Bristow84, its not complicated, but your best resource on this is the CFC. Just call them and ask.

Essentially, the transfer of ownership happens first through the CFC and your provincial firearms officer. After that, an ATT needs to be obtained for transporting it to your home. If you're picking it up in person, then the ATT might be issued to you, if its being delivered, then the seller normally applies. The CFC can explain this as well. It will take some time, up to several weeks depending on the province, but it isn't complicated.

I am not a lawyer, and I have never actually purchased a used handgun privately, this is just information I have researched for my personal use. Again, contact CFC to get the proper advice and details.

Buyer makes an offer.

Seller accepts the offer.

Buyer sends funds and RPAL info to seller

Seller informs CFC of the transfer, CFC provides a Ref #, and seller provides the transfer # to the buyer.

Buyer contacts the CFC and accepts the transfer.

If needed buyer contacts CFC and requests a STAT to transport item from where ever to residance.

:agree:

Just a note: An ATT is required to get the parcel from sellers home to the post office if shipping with a carrier. That's the seller responsibility. Also, one could make the argument that another ATT would be required if you weren't at home for the first delivery attempt and now have to go pick it up at the post office and bring it home. That's the buyer responsibility.

If you're buying in person, the easiest way I've been told is to do the exchange at a range. You can test the gun, the seller can get an ATT to the range easily, and you can get an ATT to bring it home from the range easily. Everyone is happy including the CFO.

You call that easy? What if the seller doesn't want to make that trip?

Since he said he was buying in person, I assumed it would be a local seller. If a local seller refused to meet me at a range to test the firearm, I might have some questions about the quality of what I was purchasing. I understand if there is distance involved of course.

Good luck with that theory.

My "local" range is about 50 km 1 way. Most of us don't have a range right in our backyards :)

Interesting comments, I've just purchased from a dealer and he's given me the transfer reference number, I thought this was for information only..... So I need to call the CFO on Monday to accept the transfer, is that right, do they also give me a STATT at the same time?

I'm in Alberta, the transfer was initiated on Friday, should it complete on Monday or is there more to it than that (first purchase hence the questions).

Many thanks

For a dealer purchase, you don't need to accept the transfer. The reference # is for you to obtain a STAT to take the item home from the store.

Good luck with that. I would never allow a buyer to test fire a firearm, no dealer would allow this either. I have seen people test handle firearms at shows, no way.

Would you be willing to make a deposit in case you break it?

Also, I have met people before and 50 % are just time waster.

Most of my buyers were from out of province anyway.

That's what the feedback is for on the EE.

He wrote that the transfer was initiated on Friday, that's not the same as approval. Some dealers check the status of the transfer, some don't, Better call CFC and check.

Alberta is usually fast btw.

Excellent thanks, I'll call them tomorrow, just to be clear it's the Alberta CFO I call right?

Really? I'd be some ticked off if a dealer wasn't checking the status and providing me with a thumbs up to come pick it up in a reasonable amount of time.

The last store purchase I made, was on a Thursday. The following Tues the store called to say come and take it home.

But your'e right, calling can't hurt.

The easiest is to call the CFC together. Seller initiates the call then hands phone to the buyer to complete.
Yes, that's what I did with one buyer/seller...I bought a pistol from a gent and sold him two of mine...Did the transfer at my home with the CFO on the line...Took about 5 minutes....Done deal.:)

Call the CFO Monday ask statis of transfer and ask for a ATT to bring it home. They will email or Fax it to you

you're already making a trip to meet the buyer, depending on where they are located a range makes just as much , if not more sense than the wal-mart parking lot

You assumed?

I ain't making no trip anywhere. I use my home. A Wal-Mart parking lot? Are you high? LMAO

I can see it now...

Hi officer, what's that? You received calls from several distressed citizens. Oh c'mon now...I was just letting the buyer look over the semi-auto I sold him, out of the back of my TRUNK!

or

Hi CFO, can I get an ATT to the Wal-Mart parking lot.
