buying ammo from the US

I was wondering if anyone here has orderd ammo from the US is it legal. If a dealer won't do it can I have it shipped to a friend in the US and have him send it to me in a private parcel?

the US is really stiff about this stuff, is buying from Europe better!

Only licensed exporters can ship ammunition, reloading components (powders, bullets, brass or primers), and firearm parts out of the US. There are a few exceptions (certain sporting shotgun parts can be exported without US Dept of Commerce for example) but ammo is definitely a no no.

Buying from Europe is not governed or restricted by ITAR so is should be good as long as you can figure a way to ship it over.

cheers thanks for that. I am trying to buy 375 H&H and 303 british ammo from some of the good British and South African high end ammo companies. I have been able to source australian woodleigh and some Canadian IVI/Imperial.
