Buying Ammo In The States

I'm new to this and was just wanting to clarify some stuff about buying ammo in the US. I'm going to the States on holidays and I know that you can bring up to 5000 rounds for personal use back across the border and I am wondering if there is any hassle in doing this? Do you need special permits? I was thinking about bringing back a 1000 rounds for myself. Is it worth the savings or does it turn into a major pain in the butt that I'd regret. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

you can't bring any back. it's illegal to export out of the USA. it's also illegal to have ammo on you (as a non US resident) in the USA unless you have a US hunting licence.
