Buying another 12g

I am poking around for a 12g that takes 3" shells. My first choice is the Maverick 88 with the 20" barrel, full stock and 7+1. I am coming up very short on my search. Plenty of the 18.5" 5+1's, some of the Field/security combos or just the field 28" barrels.

However I can not seem to find ANY 7+1 mav 88s in Canada? Am I missing something? Cabelas had the Cruiser 7+1 on back order status (pistol grip but I would buy a full stock) and others have the 5+1 securities. Is there something wrong with the 7+1 security model? Should I just buy the 5+1 and get a tube extension?

Failing this I was looking at the Mossberg 500/590 7+1 persuaders and they are 450-600+ for what appears to be basically the same gun. I am not against spending more, but the way i see it a 300$ (or less for used) mav 88, get a 100$ worth of mag extensions/parts and a longer barrel and I have basically 2 or 3 configurations for the same price. So am I missing something? Are Mav 88's just being panic bought?
 
The 500 is more expensive because the parts are better made and the design has less compromises.
You’re paying for more QC too.
Also make sure it has a fixed full choke so it’s not prohibited
 
12 gauge is prohib since oic. What you want is a single shot 20 gauge, .410, 9mm Flobert or the new super duper. 22 smooth bore garden gun.

They all need fixed chokes of course. Try to get one with full choke and 32" plus barrel.

Shotguns that with a removable choke removed and that have a bore diameter of greater than 20mm are prohib. All others are not

88 and 500 both have plastic trigger/safeties. 500 has tang safety and receiver drilled and tapped, 88 has cross bolt and no holes on top. 88 has the forearm molded into the action bars so you can't easily switch it out.

590 has a different magazine that holds and extra round for a given length. 590a1 has metal trigger housing and safety and a heavy profile barrel.

I know the functional differences between the mav 88 and 500 (not so much the 590). I am just struggling to find the 7+1 mav 88 that I want. Meanwhile I am finding 500's that are nearly identical for 450-600$ (outside the differences).

I didn't know if maybe the mav 88 7+1 was just a pain to find recently or something. As for the Norinco 1897? I looked into them. Not interested because of complexity and I prefer to have something that can fire 3" and has more options to customize for different scenarios (rabbit, birds, deer etc).

They are just in high demand, both up here and in the US. Covid is a call for many people to get something cheap, reliable and effective for home defence. Nothing really beats the 7+1 Maverick in that department.

I doubt you'll see good supply for several more months as they always seems to fulfill US orders first.
 
i compared my marv88 and my buddy's 500 side by side. the quality is same.those two guns, barrels are interchangeble.
 
if u are adding a picatinny rail, or want to replace handgard, get the 500, 500 is pre drilled. if you want to change to an ar style butt stock and pistol grip, then 88 is better because its safety is near the trigger
 
Probably a moot point now, but I managed to order a Mav 88 7+1 with 20" barrel last night from BC. Bit more than I wanted, to pay, but inline with Cabelas.... Lots of sites have previously 319.99 mav 88's at $399.99 which blows my mind.

Blair confirmed via twitter, no bans on shotguns:
"The regulation introduced May 1st does not prohibit 10 and 12 gauge shotguns. The regulation for 10 and 12 gauge is based on their standard size, both under 20mm.

In accordance with acceptable firearms industry standards, the definition for bore diameter explicitly states that is after the chamber but before the choke in shotguns. Therefore, if the measurement is taken at any other location, it is not a factor being considered under amendment 95 of the Regulations."

Or that that the "industry standard" as used by the CBSA, you know the law enforcement guys that ensure compliance on importation is to measure at the muzzle or the fact that these shotguns were banned by name:

banned 12 gauge shotguns

Sorry if you gun is greater than 20mm at the muzzle it is prohibited
