Buying brass in USA?

I called _Starline_ today and inquired about buying some brass from them. It is new brass and very reasonable, like $85/500 for 10mm. Since I live in Canuckastan they wouldn't take my order. I have a USA address that I use for deliveries. Has anyone else been able to use a USA address and get brass from them? What about Canuckastan credit card problems? The price is too good to pass up and the brass I have won't last forever. Here a good deal is $28/100 for the brass. I'm finding that buying used brass is hit and miss, and I usually miss!

Try getting a hold of Henry at Budget Shooters supply. He is a sight sponsor on this forum. I have purchased Starline brass from him before. Maybe he can import it for you. He does'nt gouge either.
 
Haven't dealt with the border regarding firearms stuff... Always knew the penalty just isn't worth the "maybe" legal or not issue... But empty, unprimed Brass is illegal to take back to Canuckastan? Wow... just WOW....
 
Yep. Export permits are required from the US Dept of State for the export of ammunition components (brass, primers, bullets) regardless of quantities (i.e. you can't bring one single bullet back). US Dept of Commerce requires export permits for shotgun hulls, and components.

The US has to keep us Canadian sports shooters from supplying Al Qaeda after all.
 
Hey, if the terrorists got their hands on some unprimed .44-40 brass we would have another 9/11, right?

From what I have read the chance of actually seeing jail time is quite small unless you show malicious intent but getting a lifetime ban from ever entering the US again is an almost guarantee.
 
I was at the boarder crossing on Monday. They told me I could bring back 5000 rounds of live ammo, I got a pamplet from them but have yet to read it. The biggest problem is to get someone in the USA to sell it to you I hear. Tomorrow I'll have to have a look at their pamplet.

You were at the Canada Customs side, so they gave you the Canadian regulations. Unfortunately, the USA laws require an export permit for reloading components. If Homeland Security catches you violating the USA laws, you may also end up feeling violated.:eek:
 
A buddy and I went down to Az to do a percision rifle course. It was full of .308s and .338s. He and I collected all the brass we could get our hands on (the other shooters were Military or LE, so they didn't need to worry about reloading) and had almost 20kilos (40 lbs or so) of brass each. How do I know? Because the nice US customs official weighed our brass bags out of curiousity before we got on the plane back in Phoenix. This was spent brass. Did they just eff-up or are we being paranoid about all the export restrictions? I also bring back spent brass from my day trips to the gun clubs around the border here, and I've never had an issue. I'd like to know before I get sent to Guantanamo....

they screwed up... you got lucky. Keep pushing your luck trying to save a few bucks on brass, you won't have to worry about matches in the states once you get stopped at an outbound check...
 
Well, it seems brass is indeed on the ITAR list. If anyone wants to read it:

The part about the brass specifically is listed on page 3 of the .pdf, Category III (Ammunition/Ordnance), F-1

.....and come to think of it, maybe I don't get hassled because I go and come across the border with my guns and my ATF Form 6NIA, which also has listed all my ammo. The border guards probably think it's my own spent casings I'm bringing back (which is the truth, except for that Az trip where mine were mixed in)

For the sake of clarification. I have the Canadian Border Services Agency pamplet here. It is #BSF5044 (E) Rev. 06. On page 12 it states"
You may import authorized sporting and competitive ammunition and reloading components for your personal use. Quanities that may be imported for personal use and not for sale without requiring an Explosives Importation Permit from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) include: Small-arms, sporting ammunition, up to a maximum of 5,000 rounds; primers, up to a quantity of 5,000; empty primed cartridge cases, up to a quantity of 5,000; and propellants, smokeless powder in containers not exceding 4 kilograms and black powder in containers not exceeding 500 grams, up to maximum total combined quantity of 8 kilograms, (17.66 pounds)" They also talk about the importing of more powder, non-residents importing ammo, and gun clubs importing larger amounts.

The lady at _Starline_ basically said since you gave me a Canadian address I cannot sell to you. Nothing about Homeland security etc, although that may have been the reason. I told her I have a USA address but she still would not sell to me so that says something I guess. I'm going to look into this further, it is worth it. I have a lot of brass right now but it does not last forever, it wears out.

Doubletap, one of the site sponsors with a link at the top sells Starline brass. I've bought some .45acp Starline from them. It's nice brass for reloading. Takes a bit of time to trim and primmer pocket uniform.

US exporting businesses have been advised that shipping an order to a US drop address, with a Cdn. buyer/Cdn. addressed credit card, will be looked at as a probable attempt to circumvent US export controls. They do not need the hassles when inspected.
 
I have read the link posted above regarding USA military equipment(ITAR list). This is all about military equipment and small personal use hand gun ammo may not apply. Small arms (semi-auto) under .50 inch are listed in the document in section II but the military could easly have different ammo than we have.

I guess what I'm thinking is that other vendors bring in _Starline_ brass so it must be do-able. May need an export permit which is a pain in the ass (for the vendor) for a small order. I don't need any brass today and for the near future anyway. I could easly buy from the site sponsor listed in the comments and it would cost me more but worth it to save the hassle. I don't need large numbers anyway, like 5,000 brass at one time. The site sponsor sells for $28/100, my local dealer is closer to $40/100, others sell for $26/100 of 10mm, the cost is $17/100 plus shipping etc.

What I'm finding is that brass can be used maybe 5 times than it is junk. I will need to buy more brass and should just buy new brass at the get-go. Trying to find a way to do this on the cheap!

I guess this is one of the great things about the internet and this group, we can discuss issue of interest and maybe learn things from each other.
