The Schofield used a shorter case to accommodate the shorter cylinders of the Schofield. The US Army used both revolvers. While the shorter case was never referred to as the 45 Short Colt the longer case was referred, by some, as the 45 Long Colt. Not unlike a contemporary cartridge, the .41 Long Colt and the .41 Short Colt. The latter not being as popular as the longer round.
