Buying First Hunting Rifle: Mossberg or Savage Arms?

i have both rifles and i'd recommend either the 243, 270 , or 25/05 calibers for deer, and Yes the stevens is nicer than the ATR but I like my atr in 270 just as well as my others I have the entire stevens 200 lineup and they are great rifles that Savage put out , the edge is also good, and same with the mossberg atr. just pick the caliber and the rifle that is most "you" if you get my meaning, and go with it.

As I stated earlier. I own both Savage and Mossberg. I like them both. I will say that my wife has trouble with closing the bolt in the savage, but no trouble with the ATR's. I am sorry, I do not need to spend $1000 yet on a rifle/scope combo to shoot deer. As a matter of fact, it has only been in the past two years I needed a scope and the Bushnell trophy line has served me well.
I am quite happy with my $450 Savage 111 package, but I did change out the scopes on both of the ATRs for Bushnell Trophy scopes. I would encourage anyone else to do the same. And if you look, the scoped package is only about $50 more than the un-scoped. Most dealers (at least mine will) will swap that piece of crap out right then and there for an extra $100. I still got my .308 ATR with a 3-9X 40mm for less than they wanted for the Savage package (which came with a low-end Bushnell scope that works just fine).

Perhaps it may of already of been mentioned but for a first time gun I have seen many on the EE such as midlands and such at a very reasonable price ( under $400 ) for a good solid rifle. With a little searching and patience a person just might find a very nice rifle made of solid wood and good steel rather than tupperware.

No offense for the Savage/Moss/Marlin suggestions they are good guns and I own some myself. My first gun was old school construction and there is something that just seems right with hunting with blueing that is a bit worn off and a stock with a scratch or two on it.

You all miss the point, he wants to buy an economical first gun. You keep trying to upsell him.

Buy the Savage in 270, great first gun, re-sellable at near purchase price if you decide you dont want to hunt. Or keep it, it is a cheap knock around gun

NO.

NOT .270! It's a great gun, but pick a caliber people actually want to purchase. Go on the EE and look for a .308 Savage. Rare as hen's teeth if they're priced accordingly. But look at the 270's... Lots still floating around, no matter the discount. :yingyang:

there was some early discussion on recoil of particular calibers in deciding what to get....here's a list of calilbre and recoil in ft/lbs (foot pounds) and I don't think you can go wrong with a savage package.
Have fun!!!
