Buying first restricted handgun ONTARIO

.45 gets pretty expensive if you shoot often, or even not so often.
Just for costs alone I would consider 9mm, or .22 if you're super-cheap like me.

I like your thoughts on the 9mm. I shot my rifles back home at LEAST once every two days. But I had an uncle by marriage roll his own ammo. So it was practical for me to do so. Up here I'm stuck to factory ammo.. which leaves me with much higher costs.. 9mm may be my option

I recommend colby gun cub. It's a good facility and has both a gun and bow store inside. Wolverine stands behind their products so I recommend a sam 1911 9mm from them or the gsg in .22 is another good option

I'm going to check these Sam guns out thank you!

No sir, I used to be heavy into plinking/target shooting, but that was strictly rifles. I'm brand new to the hand gun scene

caliber should never be the only reason to decide on your first pistol. When I started last year, before buying my own, I used club guns to pass the club entry exam. failed on 9mm(sig 320), but passed with good group with a 45acp(glock 21). that was due to the trigger and the fact that I am more used to the recoil on the 45ACP(more straight back) than 9 and 40(a little jumpy upwards). Of course, now I have all 3 calibers, multiple of each, and fine with all. nothing practice cannot fix.

so, try some club guns before making that decision. Or, pick the MP40(or MP9) range kit. there are many discussions on this first gun question. I have posted some of the benefits of this choice. So, take a look and make your own decision. Remember, regard what anyone else says, only you know yourself the best.

Hmm interesting thank you, I never really thought of that. A .45 may not be the best choice to start off with

Guys, your awesome I just left Colby store, held a gsg 1911 22. I might look into the 9mm. I do apprichieate all the information you guys provided me.. only one thing, Colby Dr is 305.00 per year.. is there anywhere with a slightly lower yearly fee? Or is that pretty standard up here. Thanks again guys... your all very helpful in my decision.

WCRA has lower fees

It sounds like money and cost are pretty important to the OP. If that's the case, you should consider buying a $169 TT-33 from Lever Arms or weimajack here on CGN. Then take $499 and buy a crate (2250 rds) of ammo. It's still the cheapest ammo out there and will give you some real excitement when shooting it.

Most others wouldn't agree with this recommendation but it's the path I've taken and I don't regret it one bit. I've put almost the whole first crate down range and worked on my technique. I now have a 1911 in .45 ACP and have shot many 9mm Sig, I shoot them all well. Practice is key. I tried a .22 and IMO a .22 isn't as fun to shoot.

In my opinion, save on the gun, but lots of ammo, and practice your technique.

My Go To round is 9mm. Still some deals on bulk pricing and there are some very nice HG models to choose from.
Like someone else posted…don't overlook a Revolver. They are even available in 9mm.
IMO…everyone should also own at least one 22lr HG. My MKIII tags along to the range with my Semi's & Revolvers.

Very nice! I'm now leaning towards a 9mm, just for costs. I just moved out on my own, so costs are huge for me. 22lr isn't a bad cartridge either, but I have my 22lr rifle that I can shoot decently accurate out to 100 yards. So I might just get the 9mm for now, and get a 22LR in the near future. I'm looking into joining the WCRA, I like the sounds of what they have going on, an there pricing.

The plus of starting with a .22 is you won't develop bad habits caused by recoil and ammo is dirt cheap. I personally am not a .22 guy. But everyone is different. Not having much experience you gotta test the water and see what your preference is.

hi model 65. I have an extensive 22 rifle collection but was never a 22 handgun type guy but the reality is that most people will eventually end up with one for one reason or another. Keep that in mind. My reason was that the wife did not enjoy the 9mm or 380. I held it off as long as I can because I am a 9mm guy. Nothing wrong with buying the calibre and handgun you dream about as you first restricted. Mine was a Beretta 92fs because that was my personal service pistol so when I had the chance, it was my first purchase. I just wanted to say that that was the first handgun I purchased to my grand kids. 4 Beretta's and many, many handguns, shotguns and rifles afterwards I got a Ruger 22/45 for my wife... now she tells me she wants a S&W wheel gun in 22. lol.

Good luck and ask to deal with Eddie when you go into Shooters Choice. He's a younge guy but knowledgable and most importantly 1st rate customer service. I only deal with him now. You won't be disappointed.

Hey guys,

I joined the forum yesterday and made a post in the hunting rifle section. I got some really good feed back so I'm here looking for your guys help.

I moved to ontario a little while ago, I took my restricted gun course while I was going back and forth working before I actually moved up here. I passed and have had my RPAL card for sometime now. I now have the funds saved up to buy. So I was smart and already read the ontario process in the foru, the TATT and the ATT. My question is, I live in waterloo ON, does anyone know of a good club to join around here? And what are your guys thoughts on the remington R1 stainless?

CZ Shadow SP-01...install 13 pound recoil and hammer spring, and comp hammer...beautiful pistol!
