I'm looking to make my first handgun purchase ever soon.

I'm looking at the Colt 45 Government 1911 in stainless.

The gun club close to me has a shop on the premises which has it in stock. Asking price is $1600 CAD. Does this sound about right, or do you guys think if I go to a gun store, maybe I can get it for a little less?

The gun club shopkeeper told me that when they put in orders, it may take up to 6 months for the handgun to come in. He told me for this model, they put the order in back in November 2015 and it finally came in last May.

I would just apply to the equipment exchange and monitor prices of similar items to get a grasp on new price vs used and make a decision based on that. I also wouldn't wait six months, hard to say if that price is too high you should shop around I run guns supplies the colt 1911s and so does wanstalls I think. Someone will chime in here soon

Colt makes a few models of those guns, so it depends on what they have. Generally they will range from $1400-$1800 depending on the configuration.

Why specifically the Colt? There are many 1911s that are very comparable for less. When I buy a gun, I always think about future resale. $1600 guns ( esp common ones, like 1911s) are hard to sell to recoup your investment.
I would rather buy a nice used one.
