Has anyone tried to buy directly from the Custom Shop? If you have, what did you get and how did it work? Could you do it yourself or did you need a US retailer to do it for you?

I got pistols from CCS but I got it from a US retailer. You would need to arrange fo a US FFL who exports and a Canadian importer.
You could do it yourself if there is a US retailer close to a Canadian border, but you would need to arrange the paperwork yourself.

Get in touch with either Prophet River or Irunguns, they both have had terrific reviews for importing firearms for people. Basically, CCS will only ship to a US License holder, then the gun needs to be exported. Another possibility is to call ArmsEast, they sell Colts and have brought in specific pistols for people in the past (but not CCS guns to my knowledge)

Thanks! I'll talk to Buffalo Gun this weekend, they will do all the work and meet me at the border with everything ready to go.

Can you tell me about your experience with them? How long did it take, what kind of customization did you have done?

Sounds good, I'll try those depending on what I find out this weekend.

I hope you're not in a rush, everything is backed up in the US. What are you looking to order?

Yeah, I talked to them and they said they'd start taking orders again in June. I want a Special Combat Gov't in hard chrome with some changes (front strap serrations, no ambi safety, maybe some engraving)

I haven't tried importing from Buffalo Gunstore. I use prophet river and irunguns. There is a member here from that arranged the Canadian paperworks and he was escorted by Buffalo gun together with other Canadians crossing the border with their orders.

If you would want a Colt SCG with customizations done by CCS, you have to let your Buffalo Gun store order that for you from Colt and have CCS make your additional customizations. From what I know, there is a very long turn around time from CCS when it comes to customizations. Some people down there is still waiting for their pistols to be shipped back, most of them takes at least a year.

You won't have any problems going through Buffalo Gun Centre.

As indicated, they do a weekly run to the border since foreigners can't posses the goodies in the US. You'll take posession of your goods on the Canadian side under the watchful eye of the CBSA and off you go. Only issue is that the paperwork takes a lot of weeks, 6-8 as I recall.

Yeah, last I talk to them, they gave me a clear impression that they do this on a regular basis, spelled out how it will work in detail. It was also nice to see what an American gun shop looks like inside, stocking 3 of everything that's impossible to find here.

I'm more worried about how the experience with the CCS will go, that I won't get grey in the beard before I see my 1911.

If I was going through the CCS for another SCG I would ask them to round (or melt) the edges, done on tactical gun. The edges, especially the slide, are so sharp that I've cut myself a few times (and I don't even shoot it). I would also take the checkering (30 LPI) instead of the serrations on the front strap. But that's only MY opinion!
OK

9 months and counting for me. BGC assured me they could get me what I was looking for in a matter of weeks.
well like i said 9 months later and no gun...
