I know this question has likely been asked and answered, but I can't get the search feature to work.

Are we able to simply order pistol mags from the USA? Or, do we need special permits, etc, to bring them over the border?

Thanks.

well if you plan on bringing them back personally or have a friend do it, when i was vacationing in LasVegas that's what they told me at the GunStore..

It's ok to order through mail... as long as they meet the 10rnd rule.
No permits (don't order more than $100 just to be safe).

Man, we need a sticky in every forum for this question because no one seems to know. There is no more $100 exception like there was. According to Canada law you can bring anything in as long as it isn't prohibited. According to US law you cannot export ANYTHING without a permit *don't get caught more like it*. Be it one spent shell, a stock or barrel or magazines. That being said, you're Canadian and not American so do what you feel is right...

I respectfully disagree. The $100 exemption is still in effect. What may confuse matters is that the state of Iowa requires export permits for all long gun parts (regardless of value) and Brownells is in Iowa.

This poor horse has been beaten to death like crazy. You cannot import any gun parts including "MAGS" without a permit. Don't learn the hard way with a visit from the local cops. Up until last year you could import parts under $100dollars and mags with 10 rd limit. But they changed that, contact Questar for import regulations and fees to get stuff in.

wasn't it after 9/11 when they started to require the export papers?

Hmmm...as someone who makes a living importing gun stuff for resale, you'd think I'd know better...you'd think I might know who to check this with...well, I do. I emailed my contact at Brownells this morning - and this is the email I received a few minutes ago from Brownells:

Good morning..the same rules and regulations apply for state department items. If the value of pistol and rifles parts are less than $100 on an invoice, no export license is needed.

Commerce regulates your shotgun parts and scopes, rings and bases. Any commerce item shipping to Canada must be under an export license issued by the commerce department. Commerce does not look at a dollar value, they look at the country in which gun parts are shipping to. Since Canada is an active member of the firearms prevention and crime control any commerce item shipping to Canada must be under an export license.

Feel free to write them yourself or call.

Now I'm confused. I was told by someone usually knowledgeable in this stuff that the US requires an export permit, but CDA only requires you to pay the GST. In other words, if you put your new mags in your checked luggage, no one at the US end will know the difference.

I was hoping to pick up some Wilson mags in Phoenix at the end of the month, so hope someone has a clear answer to this question. Does anyone know what Govt site might have some official answers?

thanx for any help.

US departement of state
under 100$us, no export permit required
over that you need one.
Once in canada it need to be pinned/less than 10 rounds and you will pay Gst+provincial tax (if you enter your province)

Icefire

Is there any way to import mag BODIES only, and then assemble and pin them here? That way you avoid the hassle of getting them pinned down there before shipping north.

It needs to be pinned before entering Canada or you will be in possession of a prohibited device.

Yep... I am in the process of trying to get magazine bodies back that were seized from customs (ordered from Brownells BTW). So... that answers that.

I have also made at leat 12 orders with Brownells in the last 4 months with zero problems. 10rnd mags also not a problem.

The only thing that is bad are Shotgun parts & scopes (or parts which have something to do with them).
~Cheers

this is all so confusing... I phoned a couple of online gun stores, they said they can't export to canada without proper permits regardless of price. This was also from a store I had one previous business with up until last year.
