Hello there i'm planning on buying my first rifle in the next week or so

my criteria are
color Black
at a gun shop near me so i can go look at them
320$ or less (i want something cheep to start with so i can save for the fun stuff :D )
oh and rimfire (of course)

I live in burnaby BC

so far i've seen 2 that fit my criteria
the Remington Model 597 at Reliable Gun & Tackle
and
the Ruger 10/22RPF at Lever Arms

the gunshops i know of in my area are
Lever Arms www.leverarms.com/
Reliable Gun & Tackle http://www.reliablegun.com/contactus.html
Italian Sporting Goods http://www.italiansportinggoods.com/index.html
Lock Stock & Barrel
Bob's Sporting Goods
Libonati's Gun Shop & Sporting Goods

i need to call some of these to see what they have

what do you guys/galls think?
any makes or models i should be looking for or shops i should know about?

$320 to spend is really not that much when you compare what ammunition will cost you in the future and what you can potential spend on optics but for your criteria you may want to take a look at the Savage Mk II's with the synthetic stock and blued barrel. These make a great starting gun and can be quite accurate. Go visit a couple gun shops like you mentioned and check some guns out. See which one suits you the best :)

Both are great guns. I have a 10/22 t model and recommend you get the 10/22 as it has alot of stuff you can change out if you want, parts are very available as well as there is a ton of info on them. But you will be happy with either one. I will probably pick up either another 10/22 or a 597.

My budget gun was a Marlin 925R (190$) topped with a Bushnell Banner 4-12 x 40mm (130$), It's a bolt action though not a semi. The only draw back is the 7 round mag. The gun is deadly accurate at 50 yrds shooting at spent .303 brass, hits 'em all the time. I bought mine at SIR in winnipeg but I'm sure pretty much any gun store will have them, and if not, they could probably order it in.

I would have been soured on rimfires if the first was a semi-auto. The first was a bolt- a mossberg 346-B that taught me a lot about accuracy and small game. Bolt guns tend to be accurate out of the box- while even the vaunted 10-22 will require a bit of tweaking to approach what a good bolt gun will do.

I think there's 4 semi-auto's in the vault now- and none of them get first reach. It's usually a toss-up between the 52 repro, and the Marlin 39-A. The bolt usually wins....

Of the guns you mentioned I would personally select the Ruger 10/22 for the availibility of aftermarket parts for modification. It really is fun to learn the workings of your gun as you swap out parts and make modifcations. My 10/22 currently only has the stock reciever on it from the gun I originally bought.

However, I would also say that a Savage Mark II is a very good choice for a first 22LR. Accurate for a 22 and very cost effective, throw a scope on and you still will be on your budget amount.

Good luck with your hunt and have fun!!!

First of all, welcome aboard! It's always great to hear that there are people interested in starting up thier shooting hobby!

Second of all, my wife selected a Marlin Model 981T as her .22 rifle. The funny thing is that she decided on that after she "adopted" the S&W 586 I currently possess! Once her license comes back they're both going to her stable.

Up date i got a Savage Mk II
here are some pix

I've got a question do you oil a new gun before taking it out to shoot for the first time?

Nice looking gun :) Congratulations on your purchase.

Just give the gun a good clean before taking it out ((the barrel that is). This will get any of the factory junk out of the barrel like (cosmoline?). If you want to use a brass or nylon brush that is fine or if you just want to use some wet and dry patches and a cleaning rod that is fine as well.

If the bolt is a bit stiff/rough you might want to put some gun oil on it to loosen it up a bit :)
