Buying my First Handgun! Please help!

I have shot the 5946 before and hated it. Different divisions use the p226 i believe.

Wrong, ERT members get the P226, all divisions of general patrol members carry the 5946. I have shot the 5946 and wasn't particularly impressed either.

Op, I'd suggest considering a Glock 17 as well. It has a slightly different trigger that takes some getting used to, but it a cheaper gun to begin with, and very reliable. If you spend $300 less on the gun, that's 1000 rounds more practice you can afford. At the end of the day it doesn't much matter which gun you use, what matters more is how much practice you have.

p226 all great guns. hk may edge it out a bit except in support. you can get anything you need for the sig in under a week

I'd say go pick the one that fits you're hand the best as it will shoot the most comfortably and naturally. For myself I ended up with the Jericho 941 and S&W M&P being the most comfortable(so head to the store and go through the cabinet including ones you don't like instantly). For as much as I want to hate the M&P I have to admit it fit me better than any other polymer frame out there. This is from my last round of pistol browsing before I went to the range and reminded myself that I hate shooting auto center fire pistols. It's all rimfire autos or big bore revolvers for this guy.(center fire autos just feel like rimfire for me at 20x the ammo cost...)
