buying my first new shotgun

well i put my order in to SIR for a maverick 88 field gun, its on back order but im gonna get it as soon as they get some.

my question is, if the shotgun is brand new, before the first time i use it, do i have to clean and lube it or is it ready out of the box?

also, im only using the thing for trap shooting cause i dont hunt, and i was wondering how do i take the tube block out so i can put 5 rounds in the shotgun instead of just 3? does the end of the tube unscrew, then the spring and plug come out? should i even bother?

If you are planning to shoot trap/skeet/sporting, you will learn that most, if not all clubs have a policy of 2 shells (1 chambered + 1 in the tube) for pumps and semis.

i only shoot for fun with a friend who has a disk thrower. i dont intend to shoot competitively, but thanks for the heads up.
 
if its anything like my mossberg 500 there should be a wooden dowl with o-rings under that screw that holds the barrel on
 
I'm not familiar with the 88, but removing the dowel in the tube shouldn't be too hard for you to figure out.

Give it a clean when you get it, as this will also help you become familiar with the gun. Also, it gives you a chance to inspect for any possible broken parts, which you should look for when taking ownership of any gun. Have fun!
 
Just my $.02 but I like to clean and lube up all NIB guns...first of all I like to handle/play with 'em and second I heard somewhere once that the packing grease can 'score' the barrel if not removed...I have no idea if its true or not so I clean it...
