buying pellets at crappy tire

Did a search..found nothing...just curious....what is required to buy pellets or BBs from your local hardware store? I picked up a batch of pellets at Canadian Tire yesterday and had to show ID and my name address etc was recorded in a book and pellets were escorted to the cash by the store clerk....is this the policy for air rifle ammo??
 
ok...i figured that much....I really have an issue with them keeping a log book there with everyones names and address in it and what kinds of ammo they purchase....how easy is that info to fall into the wrong hands??
 
This issue has been discussed numerous times on here. If you do a search and change the date parameter from "a week ago" to "36 months ago" you'll be able to read up on this issue.

But yes, many people choose not to buy ammo from CT due to this policy.

Been that way here for years. Remember there are pellet guns that require a pal to own so they are seen no different than a rifle.

I had a discussion with the Dept Manager at one of the Canadian Tire stores that I frequent about this one day. I had gone in to purchase pellets and was asked for ID, prior to this day I had never been asked for ID for pellets. When I informed him (the clerk) that ID was not required for the purchase of pellets he referred me to the manager. To make a long discussion short, the manager informed me that they were audited by the CFO and they were instructed to start recording pellet sales in the same fashion that they do rifle/shotgun ammo due to the fact that there are pellet guns available that are classified as firearms because of the +500fps.

that explains it then...thanks for that info...so to put this all into perspective....i need to show my PAL or POL to purchase ammunition but only have to show photo ID to purchase pellets because they "COULD" be used in an air pistol that "COULD" be classified as a firearm if its over 500fps...shouldnt i have to produce my PAL/POL to buy them then? but i can walk into any sporting goods store and purchase a crossbow or "primitave" but modern 50 cal flintlock without any ID whatsoever....d:h::bsFlag:

Here pellets and 3006 ammo are treated the same, In fact I was walked to the counter a few weeks ago with three master trigger locks. When I asked the girl why all she knew was if the item is in the locked glass case with the ammo it has to be given the same procudure. I pointed at broadheads out in the open and she said I know I know but I have to do what I am told.
 
Last week I was escorted to the cashier with box of CO2 cartridges......?
STUPIDITY HAS NO LIMITS
What's next? Controlling and registering rubber band guns?

Yeah..you know, because some criminal is going to steal some trigger locks :) You can buy other co2 in the auto AND electronics section, but it's 3 times as expensive without the walk to the counter.
 
I was told the guy had to come with me at the cash for 1.99 spark plug gapping tool......I laughed at him and told him to leave it at whichever cash register he wanted and I'd pick it up later.........this was in a locked cabinet too, pretty expensive stuff and a lot of ppl are stealing those golden gapping tools:rolleyes:
 
I think they do it with things that are commonly stolen (ie. smaller expensive-ish) items that they cannot afford to put a magnetic security strip on.

My girlfriend and I got escorted to the cashier for a mastercraft measuring tape, the girl said that shoplifting was the issue.

My theory is that they do this on items that are easy to resell, like when you go to the flea market and see a bunch of new un-opened items for half the retail price.
 
There are also the multitudes of careless folk who might just decide to change their minds halfway to the till, and simply leave said glass cased item wherever their hands drop it, and go their merry way.

See it all the time at any store, stuff in the wrong place, isle etc. ad. infinitum.
 
thats why when i go to CT (only place in my area that carries enough stock of what i use), I make my trip count. 2-3 cartons of pellets. 3-4 bottles of BBs. Then maybe a cheap accessory, then, if I have the cash (hasn't happened yet-price of pellets and BBs are going up) maybe a softair pistol.

I thought CFOs were there to make sure the rules were being followed, not make their own rules.

Either way, they make that rule a condition of the stores business license to conduct ammo sales. I've seen the letter at Home Hardware from the CFO's office stating that identifying information must be recorded. :(
 
I think they stopped with the escorting thing at the Canadian tire in Windsor.
Before they would lock it up in a red bag and the cashier would unlock it when you pay but a few weeks ago I bought a 100 count shotgun shells box and they just gave it to me and I put it in my basket and continued shopping
