I could go slower, but I still don't think, you'd get it!

If you weighed the charge and it was say 55gr. How do you know that's hot if you don't know what powder it is? IMR4350 would have a different max than IMR4831, yet you don't know which one you're looking at...

Just hypothetical.....

Say its a 30-06.... ( I don't recall mention of a particular calibre...)

He pulls the bullet and weighs the powder and it is 67.4gr. That would seem strange to me as well as dangerously high. 55.4 gr. sure, it could be a host of different powders but 67 gr is a little bit much (62gr. is the most I have seen in a manual). That would ring some bells for me too.

Correct me if I am wrong Driller.... but I think this is what you ment.

Cheers!

If he weighs a charge at 58 gr, how does he know if its a hot load of 4350 or a mild load of 4831?

Similarly a 53gr charge could be a hot load of Varget or a weak load of H4350...

It would never be as excessive as 67gr, as no powder will fit in the 06 case at that charge...

I stated that the powder was unknown and unmarked. Referencing every generic recipe charge I could find, all but two were over the recommended charges but two were near max out on those recipe’s with regards to bullet grain weight and manufacturer.
That's really the point is the person who made did no record keeping on the box or elsewhere, beside the resized issue. It’s possible they did fit in his or her rifle as fire form but I really don’t want to get into that.
I'll generically load up with SAAMI case specs, and label it,especially if I keep it around for any length of time. Some may only have a couple rifles their entire time they reload and others may have buy, sell or inherit new and used guns and reloading equipment in larger quantities. One never knows exactly when they’ll kick the bucket, so label that box with what’s in it, so s**t doesn’t happen!
I got some cheap brass out of the deal, but with a bit more work.
The end game is if you can’t verify a cartridges origin, I won’t ever trust it, and it’s something I believed was worth sharing with fellow gunnutz.
