Guys ,

I am totally green at this please be patient , I searched through a bunch of threads but could not figure out the answer .This may be a pretty stupid question but I want to mount a scope on my rem. 597 VTR that I just bough, I would like to buy my setup online apposed to going through my local outfitter however I have no idea how I go about purchasing the correct rings for the scope I choose . Are they sold as per model of scope ? model of Gun ? or size of scope ?

Thanks in advance for your help

You will need to buy rings that are of a sufficient size to fit your scope ( usually the choice will be 1" or 30mm diameter but some are 34mm ) and high enough to ensure that the objective doesn't contact the rifle without being too high. You will also need to consider whether or not you are using weaver-stle bases or proprietary bases ( such as Leupold ). Prices vary from very cheap ( under $20 ) to expensive ($200). I think it is a mistake to attach a thousand dollar scope to a thousand dollar rifle using $20 rings but others may disagree.

No harm in calling up the online retailer and saying "I want to mate x scope to x rifle, what are my options."

We've all been there at one point.
