Buying Venison - by the half

I've never had much luck with the hunting thing, whether it was patience or getting properties lined up, or whatever.

So....is it possible to buy say half a deer (butchered)???

I know a farm where I can buy cuts, but I'm not sure if they are setup to do whole or half a deer.

Interesting....I knew it was hard to come by, but didn't know it was illegal.

Thanks guys, unfortunately, farmed venison isn't really what I'm after so I guess I'm SOL

I give a lot of meat away. Mostly because I want to introduce good tasting food to people who think wild meat doesn't taste good. Most of them had a dad or uncle do one of a couple of things. Bad shooting, bad field dressing, bad butchering, or bad cooking prep.

Ask around about game farms.

Dunno what he inspection laws are like out there (suspect they are stupid) but chances are you can buy directly from the guy that raised the deer. Best odds are that they were slaughtered and cut offsite, but you at least know where it came from.

I can afford to buy my own tags. I give away some of the meat I get, some years. Lots of folk out here that like the stuff, but don't need a whole one. Probably a few guys in your area that you could hook up with, though I got my doubts that your guys can get as much Venison on over the counter tags as we can out here. :)

Ask at a real butcher shop. If they cannot sell you some venison, they will likely know where to find some. Be prepared to feel like you were kicked in the 'nads when you hear the price!

One thing you might do is if there are any outfitters in they area that cater to a lot of out of country clients they may not bring their meat home. The outfitter then has to find a way to deal with the meat. He may be willing to give you venison for free as it saves him/her the hassle. A bit of research and some polite conversations may yield some dividends. You could also offer to help with some work around his camp as a thank you.

One of the things not addressed here is WHY it was made illegal to sell wild game. Basically it comes down to "market hunting" of the 30's where everyone was trying to make a buck somehow and so there were people who made a career of hunting and then selling the meat off to individuals and even large brokerages where it was shipped by rail all over the US (not sure about Canada on this). The idea led to a decimation of animal populations. Of course, it wasn't just limited to big game either. Birds were also very much exploited. One interesting resource is William Hornaday's "Our Vanishing Wildlife." available in ebook form at h ttp://www.archive.org/details/ourvanishingwil00horngoog - it's important to note that hornaday was an avid hunter but was always a conservationist at heart and saw game stocks being decimated. One should really read hornadays early work before this one because it becomes clear that he was always a hunter at heart before the problems emerged with market hunting.
 
"..."market hunting" of the 30's..." Market hunting was certainly the reason, but that was long gone before the 1930's. The first Migratory Bird Act, enacted for just that reason, was 1913. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act, between Canada and the U.S. was 1916.
Other hunting regulations started around the same time and for the same reason.
 
Ask your buddies for some Venision in exhange for a hand around the farm, help them cut some firewood...or buy them a nice bottle of expensive Rye as a gift exchange :)
 
I would hope that you have already got a ####load of PM's from CGN'rs in your area offering to take you out hunting or share a kill...
#### around here even the ancient guys that can't level an iron get a share just for showin up.
It is how it is done!
