"..."market hunting" of the 30's..." Market hunting was certainly the reason, but that was long gone before the 1930's. The first Migratory Bird Act, enacted for just that reason, was 1913. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act, between Canada and the U.S. was 1916.
Other hunting regulations started around the same time and for the same reason.
Doh! My bad. The first book I read of Hornaday's was written in 1906 during his 30 day expedition into the Elk Valley of BC (Campfires in the Canadian Rockies - available in etext online and well worth the read) and by the time 6 years had passed his viewpoint had evolved into hard conservationist he wrote Our Vanishing Wildlife (1913). Sunray is correct. Market hunting was on the way out by the early 1900's.
