bye bye 243 win..........hello 35 Remington

shillen prefit, 14 twist varmint contour, may try extraction with a .473 bolt face but I have a couple spare PT&G PPC bolt faces on hand and they are the perfect size for the 35 Rem case, and honestly I would rather have positive extraction and ejection, just wish they where stainless to match the rest of the rifle

Im excited to hear how it shoots.

Where did you order the barrel from? I've been considering ordering a barrel for a while. How long was the wait time?

Jerry@mystic precision, I think it took roughly 3 months, not sure as the donor rifle just kind of fell into my hands and I knew it was time to put this into action. Wasn't to concerned if the barrel arrived before christmas as I am likely not going to have time to screw it on until then......but I might make time now that all the pieces are here.....

IT LIVES................together and range tested

Got it all together late last week, installed pillars, bedded the action and then bedded the bottom metal.

Cleaning out the junk drawer so I fired off some factory 200 grain round nose offerings from both federal and remington, both of which grouped right around 1.5 inches at 100 yards with a average muzzle velocity of 2050 fps, 200 grain gas checked bullets pushed with 13.5 grains of SR 7625 yielded the same 1.5 inch group at 100 yards and held a average velocity of just over 1500 fps, time to take the cast bullet load up a notch.

Finished rifle is well balanced and came in at 9.5 pounds with a nikon pro staff 5 3.4-14x40SF DBC scope.........pictures are loading.......

180's might be looking into, the 200's are shooting well and I just found a bunch more 200 grain spire points in the back of the bunker........need to size some brass

Super cool! I have a 35 rem in a marlin and wanted a 35 bolt aswell! Im in the middle of building a 35 whelen.... Two great 35's :))

Thanks YO Dave for a really interesting thread as well as terrific pictures.
Its a refreshing change from the ' this versus that ' threads to read about a successful project.
My 35 Remington experience is limited to playing with my ancient Rem. Mod. 8 , however when I was a teenager back in Saskatchewan a neighbour and hunting mentor swore by his old 35 Remington pump for everything.
In 1964 I believe, he and I were drawn for Pronghorn Antelope way down in the SW corner of the province and me being full of ' worldly teenage knowledge ' felt very skeptical of his being fortunate to fill a tag.
And in the end I filled my buck tag with a 150 yd. shot from my 8X57 Mauser, he in turn dropped his buck with one 200 gr load from the old 35 at very near 350 yds.
Thus ended my doubts about the ability of the 35 Remington cartridge..

Again, Thank-You for this thread..

Got the barrel in the mail today, varmint profile 14 twist 35 remington pre fit.
Cool project, but I too don't get the varmint profile bbl train of thought. I'd more expect a 20" light sporter weight with a small scope to keep the weight down.

I had a similar idea but went with a 358 instead.

Mine has the heavy sported contour. The Shillen website says you have to go to the heavy spotter for anything bigger than .284 caliber.

5 shot group from 100 yards today, RCBS-200-35 cast bullets infront of 13.5 grains of HS-6 powder, going to see if I can tweak it a bit and do it again. First time in over 20 years of hitting a sub MOA 5 shot group at 100 yards with cast bullets.......totally addicted to it now

Don't you love it when a pet project produces results! Nice job... I imagine you will put this one on a WT this fall... won't be able to restrain yourself.

I have a Ruger M77 International coming back soon from being converted to .358 Win... I wouldn't be upset equalling your results.

Good shooting.

Interesting idea on going 35 Rem which is a cartridge that never intrigued me until appr 1 1/2 - 2 years ago when I bought a LNIB used 21" high luster blued, magnaported T/C Contender carbine barrel in 35 Rem.

Fun little hunting combo my most accurate loads are with Hornady 200gr FTX bullets and jethunter here on CGN 230gr cast gas checked bullets.

Wow that is some nice shooting right there! Very nice build!

We spent Christmas on the Island a couple years ago so I went to a LGS for the boxing day sale. At the counter there was a guy asking about a rifle for "Island" deer. He said he felt his long barreled 300WSM was a bit overkill. I tried to mind my own business but I kept thinking the 35Rem was the perfect cartridge. The biggest hole for the least recoil in the lightest rifle. Of course that's just my opinion....

My first blacktail was shot at 15yds. Next at 80yds a third at 50yds.

There was a Rem 600 in 35Rem on the EE a day or 2 ago. Someone could be ready for spring bear in no time if they score that

35Rem....on the wishlist

I took my boy not quite 9 years old out into the mtns yesterday

Due to this thread I took along and had him try my 21" barreled T/C Contender carbine in 35 Rem with his shortened to fit him butt stock installed.

The recoil from the 35 Rem is still a bit much for him to handle he only took one shot guess I'll have to load up some slightly reduced loads for him.

He went nutz shooting the 7.62x39 SKS though.

6 grains of HS-6 and a berry's plated 158 grain bullet flies at just under 1000 FPS, it's alot like shooting a 22 rimfire lol
