byf 44 no letter in walnut

I've been on a real walnut run as of late. Initially I just wanted one example for my collection to cover the variation but they keep popping up for me now. Now that I have a couple and have a few more on the way, I'm really growing fond of the look. Especially the Kriegsmodells with a mix of blue, phosphate, and walnut. That just appeals to me.

Sure, he's a nice guy n all, but he's yet to try a Steyr. Then he'll know what's best.

Quality wise Steyr is just about the worst of the wartime produced K98'S. Pre war Steyr were excellent but the Nazis ruined them in short order. Mauser Oberndorf and J.P. Sauer produced k98's from the beginning and are both excellent quality even later in the war.

The lack of quality at Steyr, especially late in the war, is what I find so appealing about them. If there was another manufacturer that I was going to start collecting, Steyr would likely be it. I also find Gustloff fascinating so it would be a tough choice but I like the crudeness shown in the late war stuff and Steyr is the king of crude.

To each their own, I guess. A lot of guys go completely nuts for late war K98's with VERY rough machining and stocks that look like a beaver chewed them out. I find them kind of appealing myself.

Yep, I love the late war stuff more than any other era of K98k manufacture. Chatter is my favorite late war feature.
