Bystander tapes poachers taking a deer

getting this thread back on track

to me,if they shot that deer, split the meat up between them and ate it,fine by me
what i dont like seeing is deer in ditches with their heads missing.

that really pi$$es me off

Nope. Disagree.

I don't go 100 in a 30 kmh zone, I don't steal or have a meth lab in the basement and I don't poach deer.

Why should somebody break a law that I obey?

I've gone some seasons and even several seasons in a row with no deer. I could have shot a doe without anyone knowing and brought it home to eat but I didn't.

Why should poachers get a free ride?

Exactly.

Poaching is poaching. Zero shades of gray.

I never thought that I would see people condoning poaching on this forum. That kind of nonsense degrades the forum.

I never thought I'd see a post stating that a fellow member/enthusiast thought I cried for Roszko on that fateful day in Mayerthorpe in 2005, or a PM telling me, and I quote, in ALLCAPS, to "GO F MYSELF", yet there they were.....

Stay classy CGN.

While their method was lazy, and they did not have permission to hunt on that land (or maybe they do, the story is a little light on the details), I don't know if you can yet classify it as poaching, did they have a tag for that deer? For what we know they did, In that area around Athabasca, there is a lot of lease roads, that aren't actually roads, so until we have all the details I cannot make an assumption.

That said, would I "hunt" with these guys? Absolutely not, but I would hope they could get mentors and learn how to do it proper, for all we know they have no idea what they were doing, and thought it was legal. There is a lot of new hunters who dont have mentors, dont know about respect of animals or know the actual rules. Their only experience hunting is the video games cabelas makes.

Given that F&W were the ones originally posting this , do you not think that they would have spoken with the landowner to find out who had permission to hunt on his land before even mentioning the trespassing? If they did not have permission, they were poaching, regardless of any other violations.

Kinda like going 110 in a 100 zone or not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign....illegal yes, but hardly worth a nation wide investigation.

This place would be so much tidier if "umchorn2" was pink...

I have the same right to comment as you do. This is a forum and so it is an exchange of ideas. Not everyone agrees or thinks alike. I tell it how it is. And my posts are informative, educational and experience based. You are free to disagree and so am I.

Why were they in such a hurry to get away....??

You completely contradicted yourself right there....

Actually since a deer was harvested, if they didn't have permission, they are guilty of more than simple petty trespass. The Wildlife Act in Alberta was amended a few years ago to make possession of any illegally killed game animals a violation of the Wildlife Act, so if convicted, the fine could be substantial, and a suspension of hunting privileges would apply. Most people would not consider having their hunting privileges suspended , to be a minor thing to them.

Because they obviously knew that what they were doing could get them in trouble, and they didn't want to get caught.

Wow, can you image if they changed the rules for not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign to loss of lic. for a period of one year.:)

F&W mention three possible charges in connection with this incident, so it's more than a case of one small offense. The fact that the poachers were in such a hurry to collect the deer and leave the area , makes it obvious that they knew that what they were doing could get them more than a slap on the wrist. As for the people that don't seem to have an issue with what these individuals were doing, I can only wonder how many regulations they don't have an issue with people violating, and how many regulations they themselves violate on a regular basis?

If I see anyone doing something like this...I will not hesitate to videotape the incident and record the pertinent details including any identifying information and forward it to the TIPS line or to the conservation department to investigate.

We need to start doing something. As a man of action, I cannot and will not allow this type of behaviour to degrade our resources and give hunting a black eye.

So if anyone reading this or commenting on such an issue is partaking in such activities...umchorn2 is gonna have an eye and ear out for poeple like you. And I encourage all other legitimate hunters and landowners to do the same. You have nothing to fear and everything to gain by doing the right thing and protecting your resources by turning in poachers or potential poachers.

Ever see the movie "Kick As s"?

All I can picture when I read what you wrote there, is a Mexican wrestler outfit, and a claim to some dubious 'super-power'.

Cheers

Hopefully someone squeals, they get busted and an example is made of them. I have to say though, it's a wonder there isn't hundreds of these videos floating around, it's a pretty common practice on the prairies....
