Just picked this box of ammo up at a local gunshow recently and was wondering if someone might be able to tell me anything about it.

It struck me as kind of an interesting item ....so I would like to know more:)

Canadian gummint contract c1940-2 for M1917 US rifles bought from the US and A of America. Also for cal 30 Browning MGs. Duplicates US M2 ball, non corrosive.

Dominion Cartridge Co of Canada. WWII

There are two stories out there about that stuff:

1 - The boxes were printed with the red stripe so that they wouldn't be confused with similar boxes of 303 Brit and 8mm Mauser. Many Canadian troops were issued with US Pattern 17 rifles as well as Garands during WWII. It would make sense to mark the cartridge cases differently to avoid confusion in storage depots.

2 - The ammunition is specially regulated for aircraft machine guns.

I don't know if I can go along with #2. For one thing 30 cal bullets that were commonly used for shooting down aircraft were loaded with 220 grain bullets. These aren't.

One thing about them though. My Garand loves them. They will shoot into less than 2 inches at 100m all day long. With my aging eyes, that isn't to shabby. I have tried 3 separate lots of this stuff and it all shoots very well. It isn't corrosive primed either. I checked out several rounds form each batch on a run out gauge. less than .002 in. on any of them. Good stuff.

The previous information is good.

One thing about it, some people consider it to be collectable. I've seen it priced anywhere from $50/box to $10/box.
