A local gunshop has a Canadian Industries Limited Model 125 made by Anschutz for sale with one magazine, looks well used
The gun needs work (couple of tiny splits in the wood, no gauges/dents & nothing really cracked or missing and clean, deep checkering but definitely needs refinish) as well as most bluing on the receiver is gone. No rust or pitting, they apparently did some work on it before putting it out on their used rack (no details though).
It is not cheap but I need a project (trying my hand at rust bluing) so it seems like a good candidate. Or is it?
They want $200.

Hehe... im contagious!
$200 is actually pretty cheap, It will go for about $300-$400 in VG+ condition if you put in the effort of a full restoration, but the tiny splits are going to hold it to about $300 max. It's for sure an appropriate gun to start with as practice and you may end up liking it so much you'll keep it. I hear they are great shooters.
I'd try to talk them down in price though because im like that... And make sure the bore is totally mint and no less, muzzle dose'nt matter if you are comfortable re-crowning it. But it should function perfect and shoot like it should to be worth restoration.

There are two splits - one at the front edge of the forend, 1' or so and looks easily repairable, the other is about 1.5 inch long, smack in the middle of the stock on the left side - looks like it happened because of humidity variations - goes with the grain and is small enough that it would simply fill in when refinishing with tung oil and steel wool. It is really just a hairline and not deep at all. Weird that it would separate like that... especially since there's absolutely no rust anywhere. Perhaps the wood wasn't cured enough? It could be easily missed, but I specifically looked for imperfections.
It could be tricky to properly examine the bore however, I couldn't readily remove the bolt - is there a trick to it?

The CIL 125 is the cheaper receiver style of Anschutz. It is not the 64 action shared by the CIL 180, 190 and 310. The bolt can wear out and there are few spare pieces available for them. Check the play in between the two bolt halves and you will see what I mean. For $200 I`d pass. I sold one for $175 recently on the EE with great bluing and in need of a wood refinish - the new owner was very happy. In my opinion they are not $300 rifles unless in excellent or better condition although lots of folks on the EE trying to sell them think they are. But if you want something to refinish and you like it - it`s your money, have at it.

X2! The front half of the 125 is prone to cracking, and the trigger group is not as high a quality as the 64 actions, but it is indeed serviceable and adjustable to an extent.
I've been buying and selling selling Anschutz rifles and C.I.L's in particular, and parts for about 25 years, and have seen quite a few 125's go through my hands, as well as others
However, as stated, I would also pass on it.
I sold the last 125 I had that was in great shape for $175, no rust, no checks or cracks
