c.o.a.l. for nosler 165 gr B.T.

Anyone else run into this ?
My c.o.a.l. for these green tipped noslers is now @ 2.735 & STILL WON'T CHAMBER ,far less than the 2.80 its booked at & i'm postive its now a compressed load.I guess the throat on my Steyr is very shallow? It eats all store boughts with ease. I might have to go to a 150 gr, but as this will be my go to rifle I wanted 165. (deer,black bear,moose,ect)

Do your sized cases chamber before you seat the bullets?

If they do, use a starting load and simply seat the bullets deeper, a little at a time, until the cartridges just chamber easily, then shorten them up another .010" or so.

I'm guessing this is a 308 Winchester, right?
The Steyr rifles I have encountered tend to have short throats.
Factory ammo is usually designed to fit any throat that may exist.
Depending on the powder you are using, a compressed load may or may not be OK

If you are loading for the first time, the load would be the book STRT Load, right? That is what a start load is for. keep seating until it chambers without a bullet mark, then 10 thou more, as mentioned above.

Load 3 of each in 0.3 gr increments up from the Start laod, and test. be prepared to stop an pull bullets if you run into any pressure signs.

This is called load development and pretty standard for any new bullet - rifle.

It's more likely yoru case isn't resized properly. There is a lot of pressure available when you shut the bolt, unless you crimped the cases the bullet would more likely move unless you are jamming the case full of powder.

With proper neck tension, it would take a lot of effort to move the bullet in the case by closing the bolt.

However, until I tried chambering a sized case, I wouldn't rule out a sizing problem.

all brass was sized before starting. I'm pretty sure its a combination of a short throat and a long bullet .havn't had this trouble with any other .308 win loads & these noslers are very pointy

Is COAL & OAL the same?
My COAL's are always shorter than the OAL as the tip of the bullet enters the gauge.
What happens when you use factory?

COAL (cartridge over all length) and COL (cartridge overall length) are the same thing. You are measuring (with your gauge) from where the bullet touches the gauge. Depending on the bullet/leade rifling combo, this could be shorter or longer. - dan
